I taught all levels of high school English for Baltimore County Public Schools for forty years, retiring in 2011. Having a passion for teaching, I help students understand difficult concepts in interesting and fun ways. Reading and communication skills are the keys to all other subjects, and my strength is my knowledge of grammar, writing, and literary analysis. What I love about working with students is helping them become better readers and writers. One measure of my success in conveying those skills is that during my time in the classroom, my students performed well on state and county standardized tests.

I have also worked as an item writer for both CTB McGraw Hill and Educational Testing Service. Providing me with an opportunity to write items for standardized tests, this experience allowed me to understand how test questions are constructed so I can help students be more successful on high stakes tests.

I have taught American literature, world literature, grammar, vocabulary development, and writing both as a classroom teacher and tutor. As a writing teacher, I taught my students the three phase approach: pre-writing, drafting, and revision. Planning, organizing, and polishing are important aspects of effective written communication.

Students and parents may contact me if you have any questions or need more information about my qualifications to teach a particular aspect of English. I am available any time during the week for tutoring.

Grammar,

Grammar

When I taught, every lesson began with a grammar, usage or mechanics drill. My focus was always on using these skills to improve student writing, not to have students use them in isolation. Correct grammar, usage, and mechanics polish writing and help students speak the language of success.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have a keen eye for detail and teach my students that skill as they perform the final step before publishing their writing, polishing through careful editing. I provide feedback to students at first and then ask them to correct the mistakes I have highlighted. Eventually, students gain confidence in proofreading their own writing without my help.

Reading

Reading

As a high school English teacher, I focused on both learning to read and reading to learn. Good readers should always have a conversation with the author as a way to comprehend difficult material. Students should annotate a text as they read by asking questions, determining vocabulary meaning through context clues, drawing conclusions, and agreeing or disagreeing with points of view expressed in the text as a way to make the text come alive.

Literature,

Literature

As an English teacher and tutor, I believe that all genres of writing provide us with personal messages about the human condition. I have a wealth of content knowledge about how particular genres such as drama, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry convey these themes through literary elements and techniques. I provide students with the tools such as the critical approaches so they can unlock the meaning of any text.
