I have studied and performed as an oboist for nearly fifty years, performing with such groups as Harrisburg Symphony (PA), National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC, Washington Bach Consort, as well as a free-lance performer through the Tri-State area (PA/MD/VA). I have also performed and taught clarinet, mainly beginning level through high school.
I prefer serious students who will participate in regular practice habits and who have parental support and encourage. This is crucial for students who study privately. Because oboe requires a somewhat more intensive form of study, students are expected to practice as close to daily as possible. More advanced students who plan to continue playing in college will be expected to learn the basics of reed making and balance their prep time for lessons accordingly.
I rarely give up on students. Teaching is a passion of mine. I enjoy watching students achieve milestones in their progress. Good oboists can be sought after for college ensembles, even if not majoring in music. I am proud of the achievements my students have attained. Some are now teaching/performing in significant roles in public schools, colleges and universities, and performing in service bands.
If you want to be the best you can be at your instrument, to fine-tune the basics and move into more advanced performance situations, please contact me. I'll be happy to discuss my methods and outline a course of action based on our discussion.
