For standardized tests (SAT, ACT, etc.), I recommend buying a prep book and taking practice tests. That helps to diagnose weak areas. Going over sample problems with a student often helps to find out where there might be obstacles. While going through sample problems, we may find that we need to pause to focus on a particular skill.

Throughout middle and high school, I was on Math Team. My school's team competed in national tournaments, and I was the nation's #1 high school senior in math in 1987 (Mu Alpha Theta).

While working with a student, I like to make up problems on the fly that test the specific skill we are working on. A white board works well for this so that I can see the student's work and correct where necessary.

While earning my Master's in Entomology at the University of Maryland, I worked as a TA (teaching assistant) for freshman biology. I taught lab sections, prepared students for exams, graded exams, graded lab reports, and tutored those who needed extra help.

I like to use real-life examples to help others learn, and I like to actively involve students in the learning process. Learning doesn't have to be a passive experience. The more one interacts with the material, the more likely one is to learn and retain it. I prefer to tailor lessons to an individual student's needs and interests. I am open to frequent email correspondence to ensure that key concepts are reinforced.

I have composed and edited formal correspondence for politicians and small and large organizations. I enjoy editing writing to ensure it is smooth, vibrant, and concise.

I love to help others learn and discover, and there's no greater satisfaction than seeing a student learn and succeed. I look forward to helping ensure your academic an

My December 2014 ACT English score was 35/36. I have helped students improve their scores over the past year. Once you know a few simple rules (especially punctuation), you can easily improve your ACT English score.
ACT Math

ACT Math

I scored 36/36 on the math portion of the ACT, and scored 800 on the math portion of the SAT. I understand how standardized tests work, and can teach you all my secrets. I did math team all through middle and high school, and was the national math champion (Mu Alpha Theta) for high school seniors in 1987.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I love math and I love to help students see the beauty of numbers. Math is also an important building block for future subjects, so I encourage students to understand formulas rather than simply memorizing them. This also leads to better retention.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 involves difficult concepts, so it is important not to rush and simply memorize formulas. I encourage students to think through a math problem before trying to solve it. This leads to better retention and greater understanding.
Biology

Biology

My score on the SAT Biology Subject Test was 790 on January 24, 2015. I go my Master's in Entomology at the University of Maryland. While a grad student, I taught freshman-level biology as a Teaching Assistant. Biology is so fascinating! Amazing discoveries are made practically every day.

Excellent

Laura's first session with my daughter was very positive. Laura's methods are very effective, even after the first session, she had already made an impact. My daughter feels confident in her success moving forward with Laura's tutoring. Thanks Laura!

Great Tutor

It's not easy to work with high school juniors preparing for the SAT, but Laura sure gets the job done. Kids are making great strides in their preparation and actually enjoy the work!!

Patient and great ability to explain so that I retain

Excellent session. Laura provides instructions that are easily retained. We reviewed percentages the week before and I was able to retain and study with ease the following week. It has been a long time since I have worked math problems, but I am excited about the amount of information I am understanding and retaining.

Highly Recommended

Laura is very accommodating to our needs. We have a child with an IEP and struggled with the SAT the first time he took it. We hired Laura to help our son in preparation for the next SAT test scheduled for October 1st. We feel so relieved that Laura not only can design a special learning program but truly understands our son's abilities and he is learning from the one on one tutoring. We will continue to recommend Laura for those in need of her services and will also use her services through our son's senior year.

Great Tutor

Laura has been our tutor for over 2 to 3 weeks now and has helped our 6th grader with Algebra and assisted him in preparing for HSA. She explains complex concepts of both classes in a way that our child can comprehend and apply. She is very professional and responsible. She responds immediately for our needs. I would highly recommend Laura.

Excellent communicator.

Today was my first session with Laura. From the moment she pulled out her white board and started to write, I knew I had found the right tutor! All of this happened within 5 minutes of the commencement of my lesson. Being a person with math anxiety, I never once felt nervous -- as a matter of fact, I began to get more and more confident as the lesson proceeded. She quickly identified what I needed to do and jotted down exercises to stress what I needed to learn. Laura is an excellent communicator, and did not make me feel "inadequate" when I did not come up with the correct answers. She patiently showed me where I went wrong and encouraged me to try again. I am very pleased with this tutor and I give her a glowing recommendation.

Perfect match to meet my daughter's needs.

This was my daughter's first tutoring session with Laura and it went extremely well. Laura was very accessible, flexible, and available for tutoring sessions. My daughter was happy with Laura's use of a white board so she could catch any mistakes in solving 8th grade algebra problems and show her how to approach and correct them. Laura's use of Venn diagrams helped my daughter to better understand how to solve word problems and after the session she felt empowered. As a parent new to WyzAnt and tutoring in general, I was extremely impressed with Laura's punctuality, skillsets, knowledge of the subject, and approachability. We look forward to having more tutoring sessions with Laura in the weeks to come. I am seriously considering continuing with the sessions over the summer months to better prepare my daughter for high school.
