My wonderfully diverse experience in the Public School classroom includes working with students in General Education, Special Education, and Language Learning. My students came from varied ethnic groups, foreign countries, and socio-economic circumstances. I’ve had the privilege of watching all levels of every category of students learn to love learning. Much of my experience is at the upper Elementary and Middle School levels, although I have also spent time with students as young as three years old and as old as those who wish not to divulge their age. Over my 16 years in Public Education, I have taught classroom groups, small groups, and one-on-one. I have taught professional development workshops and technology training sessions and on-line. I have volunteered in Central American schools and religious settings.
With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Politics (University of Maryland, College Park) and a Master of Science in Educational Media Design and Technology (Full Sail University), I was able to design, develop, and deliver effective, engaging lessons for all of my learners. I like to begin my lessons with something unexpected or a real-world problem to solve. The lesson often ends with a practical approach, an intriguing question, or an invitation to explore the concept further. I strive to make each concept relevant and valuable to my students. I found I was able to do this in all subjects I taught: Reading and Language Arts (RELA), Science, Health, Social Studies, and Physical Education.
My goal is not only to teach a skill or concept but to help my students become brave, confident risk-takers and confident critical thinkers. Test prep has a well-deserved place in learning, but true education is a far deeper endeavor.
