Hello! My name is Phoenix (Ashleigh is my birth name; I haven't figured out how to correct it on my profile), and I am looking to tutor students in different areas of English, including language, proofreading, lit, and writing. I'm open to students of all ages.
I've always had a love for reading, writing, and words in general. Throughout school, I loved reading for fun and had a passion for creative arts, like painting, drama, set-design, reading, and writing. In high school, I enrolled in honors English classes all four years and AP Studio Art in my senior year. I was inducted into the National Art Honor Society and the International Thespian Society in my last year of high school. My love for art helped my appreciation for literature by giving me greater attention to detail, which I applied to storytelling, themes, and wordplay.
I graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in English Lit. During that program, most of my studies were in Shakespearean and Romantic-era literature, as well as modern feminist, race, and LGBTQ critical theory. I'm currently living with disabilities that make it difficult to hold down a regular job, and going back to school isn't in the cards right now, so I consider tutoring a good way to both teach and bring in some extra income.
I want to encourage others to appreciate literature as well, and tutoring is a good way to do that. The best thing about this is that there are so many avenues with which a tutor can help students appreciate these things, whether they need help preparing for testing, learning English as a second language, or understanding reading or writing when they struggle with it.
I have tutored people of various ages, ranging from middle school to adult. When tutoring, I seek to help students learn by encouraging them to be active rather than just giving them the answers. I care very much about my students, and not just helping them make the grade, figuratively or literally, but rather, helping them appreciate learning more.
