Hello! My name is Phoenix (Ashleigh is my birth name; I haven't figured out how to correct it on my profile), and I am looking to tutor students in different areas of English, including language, proofreading, lit, and writing. I'm open to students of all ages.

I've always had a love for reading, writing, and words in general. Throughout school, I loved reading for fun and had a passion for creative arts, like painting, drama, set-design, reading, and writing. In high school, I enrolled in honors English classes all four years and AP Studio Art in my senior year. I was inducted into the National Art Honor Society and the International Thespian Society in my last year of high school. My love for art helped my appreciation for literature by giving me greater attention to detail, which I applied to storytelling, themes, and wordplay.

I graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in English Lit. During that program, most of my studies were in Shakespearean and Romantic-era literature, as well as modern feminist, race, and LGBTQ critical theory. I'm currently living with disabilities that make it difficult to hold down a regular job, and going back to school isn't in the cards right now, so I consider tutoring a good way to both teach and bring in some extra income.

I want to encourage others to appreciate literature as well, and tutoring is a good way to do that. The best thing about this is that there are so many avenues with which a tutor can help students appreciate these things, whether they need help preparing for testing, learning English as a second language, or understanding reading or writing when they struggle with it.
I have tutored people of various ages, ranging from middle school to adult. When tutoring, I seek to help students learn by encouraging them to be active rather than just giving them the answers. I care very much about my students, and not just helping them make the grade, figuratively or literally, but rather, helping them appreciate learning more.

Approved Subjects

American History

American History

My area of specialty is English and related subjects, but I'm also a big history and politics buff. In addition, I can help students better analyze historical events as they impacted the world in the past and present, including American History.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

English is my specialty, but I'm also a science enthusiast. In addition, I'm able and eager to help elementary school kids who are having trouble understanding the basics of science.
English

English

I've been a bookworm with a love for words and language from an early age. I took Honors English classes all through high school, and hold a Bachelors of Arts degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Maryland at College Park.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I am a native English speaker (born in Buffalo, New York and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland). I also have a background in Spanish and French, so I have some understanding of English compared to and translated to and from other languages. I feel this is important in being able to teach English as a second language. In addition, I have excellent grammar and proofreading skills and have been educated in language and literature through the university level. In addition, I'm currently taking online non-credit courses offered by Montgomery college in teaching ESL just to learn more about it.
Grammar

Grammar

In addition to my English BA, I'm an avid reader and freelance writer with a great eye for detail. While finding freelance editing jobs has been hard, I often help my mom (who is a teacher herself and working toward a certification) edit and proofread applications she fills out and papers she writes.
Proofreading

Proofreading

My educational background is in English Language and Literature. As such, I know quite a lot about sentence structure, grammar, and spelling. The written work I did in college was mostly self-edited, as is the freelance writing I currently do.
Reading

Reading

I have taken literature classes through the university level, and have been an avid reader since childhood. My mother has been an elementary school teacher for almost two decades as well, and through her, I've gained insight in the types of reading material and comprehension assignments that are appropriate for younger children.
Writing

Writing

My Bachelor's degree is in English, so I have extensive experience with academic writing at the university level. In addition, I have a good eye for grammar, spelling, and language choices, which gives me an additional edge when it comes to catching errors.
