About Mark

Hi,

My name is Mark. I am a teacher of Mathematics and Physics and a recently retired Earth Scientist from the NASA - Goddard Space Flight Center. I have BS and PhD degrees in Mathematics from MIT and Cornell. I would like to share my knowledge and understanding of Mathematics, Physics, Earth Science, and Computers with the next generation of students and professionals. I have over 1000 hours of tutoring experience in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Technical Writing, SATs/ACTs and related areas with more than 75 students.

I am here to help you! I am here to help you master the powerful mathematical and scientific tools that will support your education and your career. I am here to present a broader, gentler picture of math and science and to demonstrate to you the enormous scope, power, and benefits of these subjects for almost any endeavor.

I am here to teach you to use your natural intuition and creativity to understand and solve problems in these subjects and in life in general. I am here to show you how to break problems down into small, manageable steps and to build up your self-confidence in applying the natural mathematical talent that you and everyone else is born with.

I have taught classes at Cornell University, the State University of New York, New York University, Columbia University, the University of Maryland, and at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. I scored a 790 on my SAT Math test. I have received examination preparation training from Kaplan. I have over 1450 hours tutoring experience with over 90 students, including many in ACT, SAT, GMAT, GRE, and ASVAB/OAR. I have helped many of my SAT and ACT students improve their scores. Astronomy

I have studied Astronomy as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and I am currently involved, through the American Geophysical Union, in a project to study the properties and characteristics of the Earth-like exoplanet, Gliese 581-d.

ASVAB

I am an experienced ASVAB/OAR tutor. I have received examination preparation training from Kaplan. I have helped one of my ASVAB students to successfully join the Navy by helping him to increase his ASVAB score from a 38th percentile ranking to a 52th percentile ranking. I have helped students gain admission to Officer Candidate School for both the Navy and Army, including one student who increased his ranking from the 60th percentile ranking to the 80th percentile. Calculus

I studied Calculus in high school and as an undergrad at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I taught it and applied it to my PhD thesis on non-linear partial differential equations at Cornell University. I applied Calculus extensively in my years as Earth Scientist and numerical modeler of the Earth's Land/Ocean/Atmosphere System at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. I have over 1450 hours tutoring experience, including Calculus at all levels.

Differential Equations

I studied and taught Partial Differential Equations as part of my graduate work at Cornell University. My PhD thesis consisted of the derivation and solution of non-linear partial differential equations for the solution of problems in Geophysics and Supersonic Aerodynamics using the multi-scale methodology.

Discrete Math

I have taught related Finite Mathematics courses at the Undergraduate level at the State University of New York at Purchase and at Marymount University in Arlington, VA and at the high school level within the Montgomery County Public School System. I have over 1450 hours tutoring experience, including Discrete Math, Finite Math, Algebra, Linear Algebra, Precalculus, Probability, and Statistics at all levels.

Ecology

I have vast experience at NASA in climate simulation modeling, and in the analysis of climate variability and climate change. I have carried out studies of precipitation, drought, hydrology, the moisture budget. and the biosphere, including the distribution and changes of tree and plant canopies and their interactions with the lower atmosphere. I have experience with global modeling and satellite observations of atmospheric pollution, environmental hazards, chemistry, and health risks due to climate variability/change.

I have over 1450 hours tutoring experience with over 90 students, including several who were involved in the study of environmental topics.

Elementary Math

I have tutored Elementary Mathematics and Math enrichment to students as young as 6-years old and through all ages up until middle school. I have helped my students to do well in the SSAT test and the Kangaroo Competition and to gain admission to the prestigious CTY Gifted and Talented Summer Program at Johns Hopkins University. Since my retirement from NASA, I have been a freelance editor for scientific, mathematical, and technical journals through Cactus Communications and Enago Editing Services. I also have over 100 hours of experience editing technical papers written by scientists and engineers at the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST).

I have a PhD in Applied Mathematics and have used statistics extensively in my research as an Earth Scientist at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. I have computed and/or evaluated anomaly correlations to verify numerical weather predictions and to diagnose relationships between physical observations and possible causes. I have used statistical tools such as the Student test and Principal Components Analysis to better understand physical phenomena. I am also very experienced in applying statistical techniques and reasoning to simulate and understand atmospheric turbulence and dispersion. I have taught basic elements of statistics and probability within a college level courses in Finite Mathematics and as a substitute teacher within the Montgomery County Public School System.
