I have over 15 years of combined teaching and tutoring experience, and I have always loved helping students learn.
After obtaining my Master's degree in Education, I taught fourth grade at the American International School of Bolivia for two years. We transitioned to Common Core my first year there, so I have ample experience designing lesson plans aligned with the Common Core curriculum. Since returning to the United States, I have continued tutoring for years. I now tutor virtually full-time.
Outside of teaching, I have mostly tutored elementary math and reading, writing at all ages, early levels of Spanish and French, and ISEE and SAT test prep. I take pride in making challenging subjects tolerable, if not fun. I believe clear writing is an essential skill, and in college, I was one of only five selected student writing tutors. I worked with students on all areas of their writing to improve their outlining, drafting, revising, and editing skills.
I really enjoy making connections between school and the outside world. I feel most students struggle with school because there aren't enough ways to use what they learn outside the classroom. By relating different subjects to each student's personal and unique experiences, students can gain a better understanding of the subject matter. Knowledge gained from incorporating experiences often lasts longer than the knowledge gained solely from memorizing facts and slogging through tasks. (Memorization does have its place, but it is never the main focus of any lesson.)
I am fairly new to this site, but am definitely not new to teaching. Please feel free to reach out anytime to schedule a virtual lesson!
