Hi! I'm Nicholas Guild. I have a B.A. from Occidental College in Los Angeles, where I majored in English and minored in Philosophy. Then I went on t the University of California at Berkeley, where I earned an M.A. in Comparative Literature and a Ph.D. in English. I taught in colleges and universities for several years. I wrote critical essays, newspaper editorials and, so far, fifteen novels, all of them published by major New York houses and many published abroad in languages from Japanese to Dutch.

But like everyone who sits down to write, be they old pros like me or absolute beginners, I know what it feels like to face that blank sheet of paper or computer screen and think "Okay, now what?"

And everyone who has been a student knows what it is like to face an assignment that seems beyond their understanding. Most problems in dealing with language are solved by finding the right approach to learning. The point is to make the path clear so that what first presents itself as a mystery becomes a simple progression to understanding. The pleasure of being a teacher is watching the light go on when a student sees that what he or she thought was impossible is actually well within their grasp. I want to help you find your way.

Literature

Literature

I have taught college courses in poetry, fiction and drama, I have also taught Creative Writing and am an internationally published novelist, which means I understand literature not only from the outside as a reader but also from the inside, as an artist. It seems to me that it is important to understand not only what a work of literature means but how it works, how it achieves its effects.
