Hello, I’m Jess! I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. I have worked as a software developer at NextStep Robotics and MIT. In the fall, I will be starting my first year of my PhD in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University. I am passionate about helping students leverage math and computer science in ways that excite them, such as through Javascript website development, creating desktop games using Python/C++, or simply making beautiful Excel spreadsheets.
I have 3 years of computer science tutoring experience at the college level, having been a teaching assistant (TA) for Computer Science I (the equivalent of AP Computer Science), where we taught students to program using Python. I also have 5 years of experience tutoring high school and college students in Algebra (Pre, I, II), Calculus (Pre, I, II, III), Physics I, and Differential Equations.
In my role as a TA, each week, I sent students detailed feedback on their homework, detailing how they could have taken an alternate approach and earn partial or full points next time. During our lab sessions, my goal was to give students as much time as possible to put lecture concepts into practice, both interactively and independently, ensuring students understood how new material related to prior concepts. I crafted example problems to show how a student may answer with a common pitfall, usually one that I observed multiple students making the week before.
I understand that every student’s needs are different and that we all come from a variety of educational backgrounds. I have found that applying concepts to applications that excite the student, as well as taking the time to understand previous mistakes, can make all of the difference. Overall, I hope to make tutoring a fruitful experience for your students. Feel free to reach out so we can learn more about each other and craft a plan to reach your student’s milestones.
