About Ellen

Bio

I am a Harford County Public Schools math teacher. I have been in mathematics education for over 20 years, and have taught every secondary math subject from 7th grade math to AP Calculus, including SAT Prep.

I have a Master's Degree in Secondary Math Education and worked for ten years in educational publishing, writing and editing math books, tests, and other materials. I have three teenage children of my own who keep me busy outside the classroom with sports and other activities.

What I love about tutoring is the opportunity to spend one-on-one time with students. I often find that simply hearing the same content from a different voice - maybe explained a little differently - is all it takes to uncover what a student already knows and to help put the pieces together to fill in any blanks the student has in their knowledge. I love the instant results of tutoring and the sense of confidence it gives a student when they walk back into class the next day.

I am very familiar with HCPS math curricula, common core math standards, and all secondary math content. My strength as a teacher lies in meeting a student where he/she is, building knowledge to bridge the gap between what is known and what still needs to be learned. My strength lies in clarity of explanations and in helping students understand "why" things work like they do in mathematics.

SAT Math

I have worked with many local students through the years as they prepare for the SAT. I am an SAT proctor and have taken a graduate-level course on thebSAT. I focus on test-taking skills as the student practices with official materials. As the College Board has stated, “Practice is the new prep.” Rather than spending our time on review materials, we will review content as we encounter it in preparation for this important test!

Excellent with immediate impact

My son was struggling with high school Algebra II and Ellen was able to clarify concepts in one session.
