I am fluent in American Sign Language and have worked as a volunteer ESL instructor. I have home schooled my children since 1998. My expertise is in tutoring elementary-high school English.

My goal: to make learning fun while working hard. We will utilize our time together fully engaged in learning and practicing the newly acquired skills. I will also assign homework and be available to answer questions via phone and email.

Since my own children are still learning at home, I am happy to meet students at a mutually agreed upon, central location.

Since 2010 I have worked with elementary, middle, and high school students, teaching a variety of study skills, such as: how to read a text book, note taking, test preparation, getting organized and staying organized, and how to avoid cramming for tests. When students are organized they are more confident. Feeling disorganized can lead to self confidence problems. If I can help young people feel confident and "in control " of themselves, that's most of the battle regarding their academic success.

Professional, knowledgeable, and kind

My first ASL lesson with Martha was wonderful. She took the time to assess my prior knowledge, provide context for our studies together, outline the course of study, and explain the text features of the manual we will use (this tutoring is not affiliated with an outside class and is based on my own personal goals). She is kind and obviously very experienced with this subject. I look forward to many more sessions with her.

Patient, helpful, kind teacher

Martha is helping my freshman in high school with grammar and writing that he should have mastered already. Martha is re-teaching the concepts and it's clear she knows what she's doing and is an excellent teacher (not just tutor). She is patient and kind and my son likes her. That's all I could ask for!

Great teacher

I've had Martha as my teacher/tutor for quite some time now. First as my ASL teacher at FCC and now as my tutor through Wyzant. She has always been very professional and prepared for each and every session my family has had with her. Each session has been enjoyable for my whole family. We laugh, we joke, we learn and most importantly, we leave smiling. I couldn't recommend Martha enough.

Martha is such a kind and patient tutor with our son who is a special education student. She patiently guides him through assignments that he needs to do for school or practices a creative writing assignment with him. We highly recommend Martha for help with writing!

Knowledgeable and very patient

Martha is great with my daughter who is developmentally disabled. She is encouraging and so patient with her. She is doing very well and I am so happy with the progress that she is making with Martha. She really goes the extra mile for her students to help them learn. If you want to learn sign language, this is the teacher for you.

Great teaching skills

Great pace and encouragement. We got right into the lesson and practiced what we'd learned. Martha recommended helpful curriculum and provided us with other resources to use for reference.
