I received my Ph.D. in English at the George Washington University, and currently teach as a Senior Lecturer in the Asian American Studies program at the University of Maryland, College Park. Prior to this position, I was Visiting Assistant Professor in the English department at Boston University and a Lecturer in the English department at UC Berkeley. I have also taught writing, ethnic and gender studies, and American and multiethnic literatures at various private and public institutions across the U.S.

Perhaps most relevant to the students I'd like to support is my experience working with rising high school seniors as a Writing Professor for Thrive Scholars. I coached students in writing their college application essays (personal statement, common app & school-specific prompts, etc.), moving from early ideation to drafting and revision. Past students have matriculated at UPenn, Harvard, NYU, Cornell, UChicago, Pomona College, just to name some examples.

Having taught college students, I understand not only how to prepare high school students for the rigor of college-level writing, but also how to encourage self-discovery and authenticity so students can connect their interests/talents with future academic and professional goals. In an AI/Chat GPT-mediated world, having command of your own voice/story is going to be so much more valuable, distinguishing your application from others.

If you are interested in receiving generous support and guidance as you begin writing your statements, I would love to hear from you and answer any questions you might have. Our sessions would be custom-tailored to meet your needs and objectives, and I coach in a way that is student-empowering, process-driven, inclusive and culturally sensitive.

College Counseling

I have worked as a writing professor for Thrive Scholars Summer Academy at Amherst College. Through this program, I introduced rising high school seniors to academic writing at the college level. I also supported students in their college application process including ideating and drafting a compelling personal statement. I can assist with narrowing topics for common application prompts as well as supplemental essays that are specific to a student's university/college of choice. What is important in this process is that writers feel like they have ownership of their content -- authenticity matters!

Flexible and very helpful with essay guidance

Jennifer is great to work with and easy to coordinate sessions. My daughter has greatly benefited from the focused essay sessions and said they discussed many things she had not thought about on her own.
