My name is Mercia, and I am a dedicated educator with more than 16 years of full-time classroom teaching experience (Grades 6-12). I hold an M.Ed. in Special Education from George Mason University (Spring 2009), along with dual certification in Special Education and Middle School Mathematics (Grades 5–9). Over the years, I have developed a deep passion for helping students understand and succeed in math. I have taught mathematics to a wide range of learners, including students who struggle with number sense, those who need support with foundational skills, and those who thrive on enrichment and challenge. Whether I’m breaking down equivalent ratios, modeling how to analyze data, or helping a student recognize patterns in equations, I approach math with clarity, step-by-step structure, and strategies that reduce anxiety and increase confidence.
As a tutor, I bring the same thoughtful and supportive approach that has guided my classroom teaching. My math instruction is rooted in building conceptual understanding first, ensuring that students know why a method works before leaning into procedural fluency. I use visual models, guided practice, and targeted questioning to help students make meaningful connections across mathematical concepts. My training in special education allows me to differentiate effectively, adapt instruction to unique learning styles, and design sessions that meet students exactly where they are—whether they need intensive support or accelerated challenge. I also emphasize strong study habits, problem-solving strategies, and an encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable thinking aloud, asking questions, and taking academic risks.
