Bio

Hi I'm Luke! I'm excited about helping chess players improve their skills and most of all having fun in the process! More importantly you'll learn valuable life skills such as discipline, analytical/calculation/visualization skills and the ability to perform under pressure. This can only help you in your future endeavors. It has definitely helped me.

Hi I'm Luke! I'm excited about helping chess players improve their skills and most of all having fun in the process! More importantly you'll learn valuable life skills such as discipline, analytical/calculation/visualization skills and the ability to perform under pressure. A bit about myself.... I'm from Singapore and have lived in the US for almost 30 years. I've been involved in chess for over 40 years. I started competing at 11 and rose through the ranks in Singapore - becoming Junior Champion in 1986 and National Champion of Singapore in 1988. I've represented Singapore in many tournaments including the 1988 Chess Olympiad. I'm a FIDE Master (you are given the title when you cross 2300 ELO). I've since retired from competition after getting my degree in Computer Science and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. I've worked in various computer and business jobs over the last 20+ years. However, I play a lot online and keep abreast of the latest GM events.

With chess coaching, I've been coaching players for about 10 years as I really enjoy helping players improve. I've had students of different levels and ages, from 7 to 40 years old and from ELO 500 to 2100. For the last 2+ years, I've been mainly doing group lectures at the Rockville Chess Club and some one-on-one coaching. A past student of mine managed to raise his rating from 1500 to over 2000 after working with me for 2 years. I helped him to understand the intricacies of positional play and endgames, which is the main area players will need to improve to make the jump from 1500 to 2000. I'm very happy to work with players of different ratings, ages and skill levels. I work very hard to prepare a tailored improvement plan for each student as every player has different strengths and weaknesses. Also, I do give a lot of homework, which is important if you want to improve.

I will get you to your chess goals. Thank you for your interest.

Extremely instructive and knowledgeable Chess coach

I did 6 lessons with Luke. Each of them were very well planned, explained, and benefical. For each session we did, he created a Lichess study with a bunch of chapters that we would go over. Then, he would give me homework from that session and send me the solutions to it once I completed it (usually before the next week's session). By attending the session, reviewing the Lichess study, and doing the homework, you learn a lot and are pretty much guaranteed to improve. It's very clear that he genuinely wants you to improve, and hence puts a lot of effort into creating the sessions and homeworks. Furthermore, he responds to any questions/doubts very quickly with a detailed, informative explanation. Overall, if you are looking to improve and are willing to put in some effort, he is a great choice.
