Hi! My name is Ben, and I'm a mathematician who loves helping others learn and improve in math! I have earned a Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD all in math. When I was a graduate student, I received an award as an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant. Hi! My name is Ben, and I'm a mathematician who loves helping others learn and improve in math! I have earned a Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD all in math. When I was a graduate student, I received an award as an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant. My approach to learning and teaching math is a combination of focused practice on the types of problems you need to be able to solve, as well as building a deep understanding of why things work the way they do. In tutoring, I often focus on high-level questions to guide productive studying. What makes the problem special? Can we use techniques we know from other problems? If not, why is it different? My aim in this to is to help students learn to approach new problems in a productive and curious way, which I've found helps both on the practical level of homework and in-class problems, and also long-term success in future math classes.

I have enjoyed many opportunities to teach and tutor at a variety of different skill levels. That includes a year of tutoring developmental math courses as early as pre-algebra. I also have 6 years of experience teaching at the college level, with classes including college algebra/trigonometry, calculus, linear algebra, discrete math, and combinatorics. I have gotten to work with many students one-on-one outside of class, providing extra help when they got stuck or needed additional support.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out! I love working with students, and I would be happy to hear from you.

Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I have taught traditional lecture style and flipped classroom style discrete math courses a total of 6 times at 2 universities. The content I have taught includes formal propositional logic, proof-writing, set theory, functions, and basic combinatorics and graph theory. The techniques in Discrete Math are used in every higher-level math course, as well as math research, and I use it all on a daily basis.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have taught linear algebra courses 3 times, most recently in the 2023-2024 school year. This includes matrix algebra theory, theory of abstract vector spaces and inner product spaces, least-square approximations, eigentheory, and related geometric and algebraic problems.
Real Analysis

Real Analysis

I have taken a total of 5 courses in Real Analysis, and passed a PhD qualifying exam in the subject. I have helped several students learn the content around the level of 'baby Rudin'. I am happy and prepared to help with the standard undergraduate real analysis curriculum.

Amazing

Ben seems to have the gift of being able to explain math concepts in a way that the students grasp them (and understand vs just learn) in a fraction of time compared to the regular classroom. We are very grateful to have found him.

Ben is a great tutor

Ben is a thoughtful and conscientious tutor committed to helping students learn challenging material. I appreciate his effort to be in frequent communication, tailoring tutor sessions to learning style and being adaptable to changes along the way. If you want a good tutor who’s a good person as well, inquire with Ben. Thanks for much for your help Ben!

Supper and knowledgeable

My son’s college curriculum is very rigorous, but Ben helped him earn an A in College Calculus II. According to my son, Ben is extremely knowledgeable and ‘super.’ We highly recommend him to anyone who wants to excel in college math.

Excellent Tutor for Discrete Math

Ben tutored me over the course of a semester on discrete math. He is an excellent professor/tutor. He definitely knows his content. This material is tough and he makes it easier to learn and master. He is very patient and can break down the material so one can understand it. Thank you.

Really helpful!

Ben is really helpful! And very patient! Obviously very knowledgable and has helpful resources. He is really helpful if you look at a math problem and panic (like I do!).

From Failing F to Fabulous A!

First off, Ben was a miracle worker! He made Makayla feel more confident about doing the work and safe to ask questions. He patiently explained things to her and answered questions when need be. He prepared her to test every Friday for several weeks straight and she aced each and every one of them! Before Ben she had horrible test anxiety and math wasn't her strongest subject, while everything else just came naturally...and in the end, with Ben's help, so did the math she was afraid of!

great teaching method

Ben has a great teaching method. He does not jump to the answers right away. He continues to ask questions and helps guide along the way. Calculus BC can have many steps in one problem. After each step, he always asks how to solve the next step without immediately giving away any answers. If my child is stuck, he does not wait too long and keeps my child going. He is very attentive and very patient.

Outstanding Tutoring Experience with Ben G

After being out of the academic scene for over a decade, diving back into the world of Algebra could have been a daunting challenge. However, thanks to Ben G., it turned into a fun and engaging experience that I genuinely looked forward to each session. Ben has a knack for making complex concepts easily digestible, and his teaching methods are perfectly suited for nontraditional students like myself. He's patient, encouraging, and has an infectious enthusiasm for math that makes learning a joy rather than a chore. With his help, I've not only improved my math skills but have also gained a newfound appreciation for the subject. If you're returning to school after a long break and need someone to guide you through the maze of numbers and formulas, Ben is your go-to tutor. Five stars aren't enough to express how great Ben is!
