Hey everyone, my name is Michael! I graduated summa cum laude in 2023 with a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park. Currently, I am a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in the same department at the University of Maryland, investigating topics at the intersection of electrical engineering, math, and physics. Throughout my academic career, I have taken a variety of courses across disciplines, and feel confident in providing support for topics in science, engineering, and math at the collegiate level, as well as support for high school topics in history and general standardized test prep. In high school, I graduated with a 4.63 wGPA, completed 13 AP courses (scoring a 4 or 5 on each AP exam), and earned scores of 1490 and 34 on the SAT and ACT, respetively.

As an undergraduate, I served as an Undergraduate Teaching Fellow in the Department of Electrical Engineering for five semesters, leading groups of 10-12 students through lab exercises in electric circuits and computer programming (MATLAB, C, and Python). In this role, I would prepare and lead lab exercises, provide review sessions for exams and course projects, and host office hours where I could provide additional support to students, either in an individual or small group (2-4 students) setting. I also independently tutored students in a one-on-one manner in other courses, such as Calculus (1-3), Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, and Physics.

My teaching approach is one that is flexible, and open to any client preferences. Every person learns material differently, and I welcome all learning styles with my instructions. Typically, I will prepare a brief lecture for a particular topic of concern/interest, which can help provide additional background information. This lecture often includes checkpoint questions to gauge student progress. Ultimately, my teaching philosophy is to focus on the "why" behind the correct answer, so that students feel comfortable with the framework to solve any related problem.

Calculus

Calculus

As a tutor and teaching assistant, I have helped students gain comfort in calculus, from pre-calculus all the way to multivariable and vector calculus. I excelled (earning an A or A+) in all calculus courses I have taken, from freshman year of high school through graduate school. In high school, I scored a 5 on both AP Calculus exams, and frequently helped my peers excel on the exams too. I believe math (and calculus) is much easier to understand when broken down into familiar concepts, and I want math to be as interactive and applicable as possible for students!
Computer Engineering

Computer Engineering

I am a current graduate student studying electrical engineering and physics. During my undergrad career, I completed many courses that overlapped into computer engineering, as the university I attended offered both majors under the same joint department. Therefore, I have completed many undergraduate courses that overlap with computer engineering topics, including programming in C and MATLAB, digital logic design (lecture and lab), and computer organization. I have less familiarity with courses beyond the 300-level since I specialized in electrical engineering fields, but I am confident with the courses listed above.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

Over the last five years, I have taken a dedicated ordinary differential equations course, including modeling/simulation in MATLAB/Simulink, and have used applied differential equations to solve engineering problems such as the wave equation, Laplace equation, wave mechanics, circuit analysis, and quantum optics. I have also tutored in the subject, and have a special interest in second order DEs and applications utilizing the Laplace transform and stability (such as control systems or transient circuits). I do not have much experience with more rigorous mathematical differential equations such as higher order PDEs or specific boundary value problems, but am confident in my ODE knowledge.
Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering

I possess a B.S. in electrical engineering, graduating with a 3.99 GPA and with summa cum laude honors. Currently, I am in a Ph.D. program in the field, and am experimenting with the future of quantum optical communications. As an undergraduate student, I worked as both a peer tutor and as a teaching fellow in the electrical engineering department at my university. I have proficiency in all areas of electrical engineering, including optics, electromagnetism, electric circuits, digital logic, programming (MATLAB/C/Python), ML/data science, signal processing, complex variables, and all math courses required to succeed in this field.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

I am currently a grad student working toward a degree in engineering. As part of my elective undergraduate (and graduate) courses, I completed a handful of courses on the environment, with focuses on human-climate interactions, geo-political implications of environmental actions, and species evolution due to environmental changes. I also scored a 5 on the AP Environmental Science exam in high school I do not use Environmental Science topics every day, but I am passionate about the subject and have completed a handful of courses discussing the field.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I have worked with MATLAB for 6 years now, throughout my collegiate career. I have completed many course projects and lab assignments in MATLAB, ranging from embedding images into the bitplanes of other images, to completing a satellite tracking system for wireless signals, to realizing machine learning system parameters and neural networks, and currently to post-process large data files for my graduate work. Additionally, I have taught MATLAB to peers and students, both in a formal course setting and privately. I have familiarization and expertise with the syntax of MATLAB, as well as its vast array of libraries and toolboxes.
Physics

Physics

I am a current electrical engineering Ph.D. student that works with physics every day for my courses and research. My current work is in quantum optics, but I can tutor high school and undergraduate physics content including AP Physics, mechanics, electromagnetism, electric circuits, and optics. As a high school student, I scored a 5 on both AP Physics C exams, and have experience helping other high school students succeed in these courses. I believe physics is fun, and is best learned through interactive examples, and applications that every student can relate to.

Incredibly Smart and Easy to Understand. High Quality Tutor!

I've been using the Wyzant service for a few years and Mike is one of the best tutors that I have had...period. He knows when to explain and when to let me work out the problem on my own. He has a good sense to ask the right questions and offer brief reinforcement to get my brain going while being able to step back to explain prior lessons in great detail as needed to fill in gaps or reinforce the concepts. In my time here, I've determined that knowing something and being able to teach it are two different abilities. Mike excels at both! He KNOWS his physics (and the related Calculus) and is one of very few tutors that I have used that have a natural ability to explain difficult concepts at the level of his student. He is an effective communicator that takes his role seriously and will reply to messages quickly on Wyzant (which is quite rare). He will also spend his own time to review and prepare problems as necessary in order to help his students study effectively and and uses the available technology to help build quality notes from our sessions. I've aced (yes, aced) my last 2 Physics 2 exams, largely thanks to Mike! Thanks again Mike!!

Knowledgable and engaging tutor

Michael did an awesome job explaining not just how to solve Precalculus, but also took the time to explain the why so my son really understood what he was doing and why he was doing it!

Very Helpful!

Michael has been helping me with my college circuits class and he is super knowledgeable and accessible. I have found him more helpful than many other tutors because he is still a student himself, giving him an insight into what types of explanations are actually helpful to increase understanding. I would definitely recommend!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Michael and I have been working together on a few Electrical Engineering courses, namely Signals and Systems and Fundamentals of Electronics. Since working with Michael I have seen noticeable improvements in my ability to understand and grasp course material. When I began working with him I told him “I know I’m going to fail these classes, I just want to get a solid grasp for when I retake them.” Now I’m in a position where I can actually pass! His method of teaching is perfect for me, as he doesn’t “teach to the test” so to speak, but actually explains the why and how behind what’s going on. Understanding the theory is critical to understanding application and no one gets that better than Michael. He is a wonderful and patient tutor, and never makes me feel belittled for not understanding even the simplest of concepts, and always is willing to explain things in more detail if inquired. I have worked with other tutors in the past, but didn’t find my fit until I began working with Michael. He is a great tutor and anyone would be lucky to come upon him!
