Hi, I'm Alan
I could tell you about my experience as a photography teacher (a lot) or my career as a professional photographer (more than a lot) but the most important thing to say is that I have a great deal of enthusiasm for image making and helping students to realize their potential as creators that have impact. You could be only interested in your own personal advancement or to be able to show great pictures to your friends and family or to try the waters of artistic and/or professional practice. Whatever level you are at I can help you to set goals and get farther down the road.
I am a tutor who gives clear assignments, direct feedback, and clear reasoning for my evaluations. I adapt my lessons to whatever tech the student brings to the table but also demonstrate with my own. If you put the given tools to use you will become better at communicating using images in a sensitive and polished manner to express yourself.
"Pictures come from photographers not cameras." -Jim Brandenburg
A Lot:
I created the photography program at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff AZ where I taught for 17 years and managed the photo lab and finishing facility. i have a wide variety of teaching experience both in classrooms and workshops and tailor the experience to the student. Additionally, I have a degree in Organic Chemistry and studied at the Center for Imaging Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
More than a Lot:
I was a commercial photographer (30+ years) for a variety of clients big and small and have a wide variety of photography interests in my fine art photography.
I am an outstanding photography tutor because I understand both the technology and the art of photography well and understand what it takes for student’s development.
As the topics covered can range widely I always provide a post lesson summary for my students to refer to. Contact me with any questions you have or to schedule a lesson.

Photography

I taught college level photography for 17 years, both film and digital. My major was in photographic chemistry and I went to Rochester Institute of Technology for a Master's in Imaging Science. I have tutored individual professional photographers as well and managed photographic workshops. I attended the Maine Photographic Workshops for Photography Teachers. Also, I was the Associate Faculty Member of the year for 2005. I am an experience orientated based tutor who gives direct feedback of results to students both in class and in the field. I adapt my lessons to whatever technology the student brings to the table but also demonstrate with my own. Additionally, I have been a professional photographer for over 35 years so I have a great deal of experience in many types of photography. Landscape, sports, portraits, and events are all specialties of mine.

Knows Photoshop and Photography

Just the first session, but he had lots of good ideas about organizing my photos and shooting in Raw. Next time I hope to learn more about Photoshop. BONUS: Alan supplied me with a written description of what we discussed.

Outstanding!

Alan is very knowledgeable and more importantly very patient. He asks questions to confirm that I understood and how to apply the information to improve my printing.
