I received my BA in mathematics from the University of Texas in Austin and my doctorate from Rice University in Houston. After receiving my doctorate, I taught for over forty years at the University of Maryland at College Park. I spent a couple of years at Howard University and a few years at Rice University, always in the mathematics department.
I consider tutoring to have been the content of my office hours. I discussed the theory in class, but when students came to office hours, they usually brought specific problems for the textbook or from homework assignments. I tried to draw out their approach based on how they had perceived the applicable theorems, correct any misunderstandings and make sure their application to the specific problems was well founded.
I taught courses at all levels from pre-calculus to graduate level, including calculus, differential equations and linear algebra. I taught both small classes of 20-30 students in which most questions were directed to me, and large lecture classes where some questions would be addressed to the graduate assistant.
