I am a California certified teacher (lapsed) with teaching experience in public schools (inner city, rural, and suburban), private schools (both large and tiny), and several tutoring agencies (including Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, and one I owned for 8 years). I have also created curriculum and worked with students through the Early Academic Outreach Program at UC Davis, consolidated and reported data on first-year teachers' experiences throughout the state of California, and provided teacher training as a consultant for a school district, an individual teacher, and the International Dyslexia Association. All told, I have 28 years of highly diverse experience in the eduction field, with a track record of improving student outcomes in a variety of ways and particular expertise in learning disabilities. However, for the past 12 years, I have been following another career path as the Director of Sales and Marketing for a tabletop game company. I have enjoyed my time there and have used my teaching skills to help them develop and sell educational games, but I am ready to get back to my roots working with students.
I have worked with all ages from infant to elderly, but I have three particular sweet spots that I most enjoy: (1) helping struggling 2nd-8th graders to improve their reading skills (decoding, comprehension, and fluency), (2) homework help for 6th-12th grade math students, and (3) addressing adult illiteracy. I have many more areas of competency, but these are my favorite subjects to teach, and I have many years experience in all three.
I am interested in online tutoring via Zoom with students anywhere in the world, or in-person tutoring at my home in College Park, Maryland. My home is being renovated right now, though, so for starters let's stick to Zoom. My teaching style is quite rigorous, but also full of as much fun as I can create, because I know that students learn more when they are happy and engaged. I'd love to talk with you about your or your child's needs and situation!
