I am a California certified teacher (lapsed) with teaching experience in public schools (inner city, rural, and suburban), private schools (both large and tiny), and several tutoring agencies (including Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, and one I owned for 8 years). I am a California certified teacher (lapsed) with teaching experience in public schools (inner city, rural, and suburban), private schools (both large and tiny), and several tutoring agencies (including Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, and one I owned for 8 years). I have also created curriculum and worked with students through the Early Academic Outreach Program at UC Davis, consolidated and reported data on first-year teachers' experiences throughout the state of California, and provided teacher training as a consultant for a school district, an individual teacher, and the International Dyslexia Association. All told, I have 28 years of highly diverse experience in the eduction field, with a track record of improving student outcomes in a variety of ways and particular expertise in learning disabilities. However, for the past 12 years, I have been following another career path as the Director of Sales and Marketing for a tabletop game company. I have enjoyed my time there and have used my teaching skills to help them develop and sell educational games, but I am ready to get back to my roots working with students.

I have worked with all ages from infant to elderly, but I have three particular sweet spots that I most enjoy: (1) helping struggling 2nd-8th graders to improve their reading skills (decoding, comprehension, and fluency), (2) homework help for 6th-12th grade math students, and (3) addressing adult illiteracy. I have many more areas of competency, but these are my favorite subjects to teach, and I have many years experience in all three.

I am interested in online tutoring via Zoom with students anywhere in the world, or in-person tutoring at my home in College Park, Maryland. My home is being renovated right now, though, so for starters let's stick to Zoom. My teaching style is quite rigorous, but also full of as much fun as I can create, because I know that students learn more when they are happy and engaged. I'd love to talk with you about your or your child's needs and situation!

Accent Reduction

Accent Reduction

I don't have formal training in how to help a student reduce their accent, but I have had two students that I worked with on this task successfully. My training in phonemic awareness and deep understanding of how a person's mouth and tongue move when forming sounds help me to direct students in slight changes to their mouth movements. In addition, American English pronunciation involves a lot of schwa-ing of unaccented vowels, and I can help students recognize when they should schwa a vowel or even omit an entire syllable in order to sound more American. I'm also happy to help with idioms and other advanced English language learning.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I was trained in the Lindamood-Bell methods by both Patricia Lindamood and Nancy Bell directly and worked for them for several years. I completed all but the thesis of a master's program in Language and Literacy. I have significantly improved the reading performance of hundreds of students, and been hired as a consultant to train teachers as a result of that success. Feel free to ask for more information about my qualifications!
Homeschool

Homeschool

I do not have children of my own, so have never been a homeschooler myself, but I have tutored many homeschooled students and understand the wide variety of reasons people choose to homeschool and the many ways that homeschool days can be organized. Parents may choose to "unschool" their children, "gameschool," participate in adventure education, or follow a more traditional schooling approach. They may work together with other homeschoolers to provide small group instruction or social activities, or they may work with their local school district to set up independent study, or perhaps they will make use of an online school for curriculum. That curriculum may be religiously enriched or secular, and might be organized by subject or in units of study.
Marketing

Marketing

Though I have no formal education in marketing, I have spent 12 years learning on the job. Specifically, I have been responsible for content creation for a variety of social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, TikTok, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Twitch, Discord), helped support blog entries and podcasts, participated in interviews, written magazine articles, sent newsletters and other email campaigns, engaged influencers, written press releases, procured local PR (public relations) such as news segments and newspaper articles, placed print and digital advertising, run Kickstarter campaigns, found television and movie product placement opportunities, exhibited at trade shows and consumer conventions, planned events, developed customer personas, and more. I am proficient in SEO optimization and product copy writing, as well as more guerrilla marketing techniques such as charitable donations and consumer contests. Areas that I have less experience with: Google Analytics and paid social media advertising.
Proofreading

Proofreading

BS Psychology, (lapsed) California teaching credential, all but thesis of a master's in Language & Literacy, lots of proofreading experience.
Special Needs

Special Needs

My interest in special needs students is personal, in that I am "twice exceptional"--both gifted and diagnosed with ADHD--and my brother has dyslexia. This lead me to seek additional training in helping students overcome or work with these learning disabilities as well as others, such as reading comprehension issues, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. My search led me to specialized Lindamood-Bell training, master's work in language and literacy, and 28 years of experience working with hundreds of learning disabled students. I also have limited experience with speech-language difficulties, autism spectrum disorder, mental health diagnoses, physical disabilities (quadriplegic, blind, deaf), and developmental delays, but I would not consider myself highly qualified to teach those populations.
