Bio

I am Melanka, Math PhD graduate from University of Maryland. I also have a bachelors degree in Computer Science. My teaching career began as a Teaching Assistant in 2018 when I started out as a PhD student at UMD. I have taught many courses from Prealgebra to Calculus to Differential Equations to Abstract Algebra. I am Melanka, Math PhD graduate from University of Maryland. I also have a bachelors degree in Computer Science. My teaching career began as a Teaching Assistant in 2018 when I started out as a PhD student at UMD. I have taught many courses from Prealgebra to Calculus to Differential Equations to Abstract Algebra. As a TA, I usually work with groups of students (typically 20 at a time) to help them work through worksheets based on content they have already learnt in lectures. I attend to the needs of each student individually during these sessions. I have also, conducted my own courses as the Sole Instructor. As such I have worked with hundreds of College level students with varying skills and backgrounds.

Later on in my career, with my experience and love for teaching, I took up private tutoring. Since then, I have tutored many College and High School students with around 1500+ hours of tutoring (both on and out of Wyzant). My experience at College level helped me gradually develop my skills as a tutor. Every student is different, I assess and understand individual students, so that I can give them a customized learning experience.

I was awarded the "Aziz Osborn Gold Medal in Teaching Excellence - 2020", in recognition of my teaching at University of Maryland.

It is truly satisfying to see my students make sense of Math concepts and improve each day. Those moments of success motivates me as a teacher and mentor.

As a college TA, I have worked with many students in courses related to all these areas for over a period of 5 years. I have conducted discussion sessions in which I individually attend to questions from students about what they have learnt in the lectures, or questions from their assignments including homeworks, quizzes and exams. I regularly meet students individually during office hours, to discuss and clarify any subject matter they have issues with. Apart from being a college TA, I conduct courses at college as a sole instructor during the summer. As a private tutor with this experience in college level Math, I have been able to help high school students who come to me with an aim of getting into college to pass ACT with a score of 30+. I prep high school students not only to pass the exam but also to meet the levels that college would expect them in the future. I received my bachelors degree in Computer Science. Machine learning, Data science, Algorithms were my favorites back then. Later, in my Math PhD program I took grad level courses in Linear Algebra, Advanced Calculus and Probability. These Math courses really boosted my understanding and confidence in Computer Science. I also has the opportunity of tutoring a couple of students who required help in CS topics entangled with Math.

Probability has been one of my favorite subjects in Math. I took the two course sequence of grad course as a PhD student. Meanwhile, I use probabilistic concepts in my research work. During my bachelors in Computer Science, I have used probability as a tool in Machine Learning and Data Science projects. I have also previously tutored students in probability.

Melanka is an excellent tutor. I needed assistance with assignments and understanding different data mining methods. My class instructor left a lot of gaps in his teachings and I was struggling.
