Hi, I'm Gavin! I’m a mechanical engineer with extensive tutoring experience in STEM and CAD courses. I'm currently teaching a group SAT Math course that meets every Sunday to cover fundamental concepts and problem-solving strategies for the digital SAT (dSAT). I’ve taught over a hundred students through Wyzant, and around fifty SAT students between my online Udemy SAT course and through Wyzant’s platform.

A little about me: I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with bachelor's degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Astronomy, where I had the privilege of working for both NASA and MIT on the Mars Perseverance Rover, specifically for the MOXIE project. There, I created CFD and thermal models, primarily using programs such as Autodesk Fusion 360, SolidWorks, COMSOL and MATLAB.

After my bachelor's degrees, I then completed my master's degree in Engineering Design at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) before forming my own company called Apereon Imaging, where I still work today. My company focuses on product development through the sale of custom astrophotography equipment, so I use Autodesk Fusion 360 and CAD programs on a daily basis for things like designing for injection molding (DFM), 3D printing, and prototyping various projects. I also perform CAD design in Autodesk Fusion 360 for contracts with individuals and companies, and have made thousands of CAD models over the course of my career.

My teaching experience started in college, where I was the head astrophysics tutor for over a year, and after graduating I started teaching on Wyzant in 2022 in subjects ranging from Autodesk Inventor to SAT Math. My method focuses on breaking down complex material into small, digestible steps, ensuring that students understand the 'why' behind the 'how'. This method allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the material, and that’s what I aim to share with my students. Feel free to message me and let’s set up a class!

ACT Math

ACT Math

I've taught SAT and ACT Math to many students, and I find it to be one of my favorite subjects to teach! I try to focus on the math concepts for ACT subjects as well as time-saving strategies and online tools for studying. With my background in Engineering and Astronomy, I find that ACT Math has a lot of the building blocks of math that I use every day.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Through my education and degrees in the STEM field, I have used algebra on a near-daily basis for most of my life. I have been teaching algebra and SAT math for the past few years and have extensive experience teaching math, especially algebra, over zoom.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Through my education in the STEM field, I have used algebra on a near-daily basis for most of my life. I first learned algebra in middle school and have proceeded to use it through the collegiate level when I studied my bachelor's degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Astronomy. I have also taught algebra to many private students and it is used in almost every type of math I teach, from astrophysics classes to geometry.
Autodesk Maya

Autodesk Maya

I have used Autodesk Fusion, Solidworks, and other CAD programs extensively in my bachelor's degree in Mechanical engineering, my master's in Design Engineering, product design and contracts for my own company, and other various projects and jobs.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have completed two study abroad courses during my undergrad at the University of Maryland and studied my master's in Spain. If you're exploring your options for college, feel free to contact me to learn what it's like to study in a foreign country. Great programs, international experience, and degrees that cost less than 1/10th of the cost in the US are just some potential benefits!
Geometry

Geometry

I've taught geometry to multiple students and find it an interesting and fun subject to teach! My goal for Geometry classes is to get students to think about greater theories of mathematics and to understand what a reasonable answer is - allowing them to quickly check answers and understand connecting topics. I don't focus on memorizing proofs or definitions, but try and get my students to see why something works on a basic level.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Through my college education in the STEM field, I have used math and algebra on a near-daily basis for most of my life.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I've taught quite a few students precalculus, and I find it to be an interesting and exciting subject to teach. With my bachelor's degrees in mechanical engineering and astronomy, I have used subjects taught in precalculus extensively, and I like to show students how they can apply this math to the real world. In addition, I try to teach students how to think about problems, giving them a deeper understanding than simply remembering processes or 'plug and chug' strategies.
PSAT

PSAT

I am a mechanical engineer who uses math on a daily basis, and I've been teaching SAT and PSAT Math to students for the past 3 years. I run a group SAT course which often has 8th graders studying for the PSAT, and I make my own problems and use Khan academy in my classes. I also created an Udemy course for SAT math and have taught SAT math specifically to about 50 students.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I've taught SAT Math to many students, and I find it to be one of my favorite subjects to teach! In fact, I have published an SAT math course on Udemy and have a running group SAT Math class, so I have a lot of experience creating problems and teaching this class. In my classes, I focus on the math concepts for SAT subjects as well as time-saving strategies and online tools for studying, and I have many pre-prepared classes focusing on a variety of topics from the SAT. We will focus on avoiding sloppy mistakes, working under a time limit, and quickly understanding word problems.
Solidworks

Solidworks

I have a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and a masters´ in engineering design. I have both taken courses dedicated to SolidWorks and applied SolidWorks in my projects and work experience. I have also been certified in AutoCAD and I regularly use SolidWorks, Fusion 360, and more CAD programs for my personal projects.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I use trigonometry in CAD design and engineering problems daily, and I have been teaching trigonometry in SAT prep or for other courses for the past 3 years.

Great experience

Gavin was a great SAT tutor for our student. He was always on time, well-prepared, and made the most of each session. He explained things clearly and was very patient, even when something needed to be reviewed a few times. The sessions were in a small group, but he still gave each student individual attention and offered extra practice when needed. Overall, it was a really solid experience, and we appreciated his support and dedication.
