I graduated from Dickinson College (B.A. in English, Phi Beta Kappa) and Loyola University (M.A.T. in Secondary English, MSDE Teacher of Promise Semi-Finalist). I have a current MSDE Advanced Professional License in secondary English and seven years' experience teaching and directing peer writing centers at private, independent Maryland high schools. In addition, I have over fifteen years' experience as a tutor and teaching assistant, including as an undergraduate writing tutor, TA for undergraduate writing-intensive courses, and TA at Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.

I have comprehensive knowledge of British, American, and world literature, literary analytical lenses, and the writing process, including the five-paragraph CEA essay, selecting credible sources, MLA formatting and citation, and standard American grammar and spelling. Most importantly, I am compassionate and enthusiastic about learning. I particularly enjoy building supportive relationships with students, improving their close-reading and academic writing skills, and seeing their confidence grow. Come to me to improve your vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills--whether your goal is general academic growth or a specific assignment, like a final paper or college essay.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I have been writing poetry for more than 25 years, and have been published in peer-reviewed literary journals and an edited anthology. I have written several picture books and am currently working on middle-grade and YA novels. I am an active member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and I frequently attend workshops on craft. As an undergraduate English major, and certified English teacher, I am also experienced in annotating and analyzing creative work for literary devices, diction, and plot.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have tutored writing for over fifteen years, both independently and as part of my undergraduate writing center. I have taught English, including general essay writing and college essay writing, for seven years. I have directed two high school peer writing centers, where I trained tutors on thesis-writing and revision. I have my master's and MSDE license in secondary English instruction, including supporting student academic writing.
Executive Functioning

Executive Functioning

Each of my seven years teaching, I have taught 10-30 students with executive dysfunction and associated conditions, including ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and limited working memory. I collaborated with counselors and learning specialists to develop individualized learning plans and academic supports. I worked with the students to build executive function and organizational strategies, and to improve their independence and confidence.
Literature

Literature

I studied English literature at Dickinson College and graduated with a 3.89 GPA, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. I took authorial studies courses on Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Marie de France, Jane Austen, and Louisa May Alcott, as well as survey and thematic courses on medieval romance, antebellum American literature, Victorian literature, experimental modern fiction, and ecocriticism. Two of my literary analytical essays won college-wide awards.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Before earning my teaching degree, I spent three years as a professional writer and editor. I proofread short-form fiction, marketing, and sales materials, as well as sales proposals and white papers. I am well-versed in MLA Style and can adapt quickly to other preferred styles, such as AP, Chicago, or in-house guides. I am happy to tutor you to improve your own proofreading skills and to work together on specific pieces; however, for reasons of academic integrity and student benefit, I will not "just proofread" a written assignment that will be submitted for a grade. The person who does the work does the learning! If you are interested in professional proofreading and editing services for work to be published, please reach out to discuss my availability and pricing.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I have spent the last seven years teaching writing-intensive English courses at selective private high schools. Prior to that, I spent four years TAing writing-intensive college courses and tutoring individual undergraduate and graduate students in writing. I have delivered thesis-writing workshops to college and high school students and helped individual students write and revise many thesis statements, with or without prompts.
