Hi! I’m Dr. Leah, an encouraging and friendly tutor specializing in tutoring English as a Second Language, cultural anthropology, and American Studies / Cultural Studies to students and adult learners. I earned my Ph.D. in American Studies with a focus on Applied Anthropology from the University of Maryland, College Park and hold a Teaching English as a Second Language certificate from the Community College of Baltimore County.

I take a collaborative and supportive approach to learning and create lessons tailored to each student’s unique interests and goals. Whether it’s understanding complex theories, connecting concepts to everyday culture, politics, and media; improving research and writing skills, or practicing English, I’m here to help you meet your goals in a fun and engaging manner. I have two years of experience tutoring individual students, leading small groups, and teaching adults in public library and community college settings. Conversation-based lessons are my specialty when teaching English, and I especially enjoy exploring American culture, movies, and media with my students. Learning a new language can be challenging, so let’s make it engaging, enjoyable, and tailored to you!

Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions - let’s start learning together!

Anthropology

I earned my Ph.D. in American Studies with a subfield in Applied Anthropology from the University of Maryland (2024), receiving the James W. Longest Award for Excellence in Social Science Research. I have mastered complicated theories and literature, and designed and conducted multiple long-term qualitative cultural anthropology research projects, including at the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. I’ve also collaborated on mixed-methods studies of student hunger and U.S. emigration. I hold an M.A. in American Studies with a Graduate Certificate in Museum Scholarship and Material Culture from the University of Maryland (2016), during which I completed a Smithsonian Institution research practicum studying cultural representation. I have advised and provided feedback to doctoral students about their research design, subject matter, and use of background literature.
