Hi all! My name is Dina Garmroudi and I am an incoming M1 at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine this fall! I went to Yale for my undergraduate and MPH degrees. I double majored in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and the History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health with a Global Health Certificate at Yale. I would be happy to help with college and/or pre-med/medical school prep, tutoring in science, math, writing, or reading, as well as SAT or MCAT prep. I attended Richard Montgomery High School as a magnet IB student, and I am also open to tutoring for AP/IB courses.

I have had extensive tutoring and teaching experience with people of all ages! I have worked as an instructor for Kumon, a private tutor with Wyzant (children in pre-k to college-level chemistry), an English and Math tutor for children and adult refugees, as well as a tutor for adults. I have run workshops for middle/high school and college students on health education and scientific concepts as well. Most recently, I was a Teaching Fellow for Foundations of Epidemiology I and Principles of Epidemiology II at the Yale School of Public Health, where I tutored students in group and one-on-one settings on course material and helped the Professor develop homework assignments and exams.

Because of this experience, I am very flexible in how I teach each of my students and I am very cognizant of what their needs are. I usually review the student's homework or what they need help with before the lesson to come up with a fun and engaging lesson plan where they can have a firm grasp on the material. I am also very good at helping the student develop study habits that will help them reach their goals! I love giving back to society, and I feel that tutoring is one of the best outlets to do so!

I am happy to answer any questions and please reach out if you would be interested! Thank you so much.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

I took three years of magnet and IB Biology in high school--straight A's all four years. Tutored high school students in IB Biology as a part of honors societies, and scored a 730/800 on the SAT Molecular Biology subject test. In addition, I majored in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at Yale, and thus am very familiar with Ivy League biology coursework.
Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I have alot of experience with using R for the purpose of biostatistics. I was first introduced to R in my Biostatistics class during my undergraduate degree at Yale College. Then, as part of my Yale Master of Public Health program, I was required to take both Biostatistics I and II, both using R, and I have used R for biological research as well.
Calculus

Calculus

I received straight A's in all of the math courses that I took in high school, including Calculus. I have tutored high school students in Calculus as a part of the honors societies I was a part of. I received a score of 5 on the Calculus BC AP exam, and I have tutored college level Calculus as I have also taken and aced my Yale Calculus course.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have maintained straight A's in the hardest class that was offered in my high school: the magnet IB Chemistry course as well as the magnet program Chemistry course. I have tutored high school students in the area of Higher Level IB Chemistry as a part of the honors societies that I was in. I have a firm grasp on the subject and have received an expected score of around a 6-7 out of 7 in IB Chemistry. I was a Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology major at Yale so I am very familiar with higher level chemistry: I placed out of general chemistry into freshman year organic chemistry, and took two semesters of organic chemistry. I have had extensive experience tutoring high school and college students in chemistry.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I attended Yale University as a first generation undergraduate student, and during my time at Yale, I have counseled others on college applications. As I navigated this process, as well as the medical school application process, I am able to provide thorough feedback on applications, how to put together a cohesive narrative, how to present one's activities, how to interview, etc.!
Debate

Debate

In high school I had 3 years of public forum debate experience with Richard Montgomery High School's debate team, and was a semi-finalist in the regional Montgomery County public forum debate competition. During my time at Yale College, I also did Moot Court for three years, during which I had to debate and present oral arguments in front of a mock Supreme Court. I am very experienced in writing speeches, presenting speeches, coming up with rebuttals and counterarguments, and skills to present confidently.
EMT/ NREMT

EMT/ NREMT

I have been volunteering as an EMT since 2021, and I have worked for both Seymour Ambulance Association as well as the Yale Emergency Medical Services. I have been NREMT certified as well, and can help with practical skills or knowledge needed for the profession/EMT class coursework! During my time with both Seymour and Yale, I helped train new students through proctoring as well as during shifts.
English

English

I have a firm grasp on grammar rules and I have taught refugee students, middle school students, and elementary school students basic rules of English as well as experience helping them with Reading and Writing. I have experience being an Early Learning Instructor at at a learning center as well, so I know what rules to teach students when they are learning English. I received a score of a 5 on the AP English Literature exam last year.
Epidemiology

Epidemiology

I attended the Yale School of Public Health, where I attained a Master of Public Health in Chronic Disease Epidemiology. I have not only taken Foundations of Epidemiology I and Principles of Epidemiology II, but I have also served as a Teaching Fellow for both of these courses. I led discussion sections and office hours for the courses, and met with the professor and teaching team weekly to create homework assignments and exams. I also tutored students one-on-one for Foundations of Epidemiology I.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have a Bachelors of Arts in the History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health from Yale University, which was a writing intensive major as many of the seminars required students to write essays on various topics. I ended up writing a thesis for this major, and am experienced in other forms of essay writing as well, including personal statements for college and medical school, as I will begin as a medical student at Johns Hopkins in fall 2025!
Farsi

Farsi

My parents taught me Farsi from when I was little and I can speak, read, and write it because I am fluent in it for 18 years now. My grandmother, who is a Farsi teacher, taught me as well, and I have books to accompany my teaching for students, along with letter charts that could help them. I can create additional resources as well and help with handwriting and comprehension.
Genetics

Genetics

One of my majors during my undergraduate degree at Yale University was Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, where I took both "Genetics" and "The Human Genome," two courses that introduced to me to core Genetics principles. I have also applied genetics during my wet lab research as well. I have performed Mendelian Crosses using C. elegans to create rescue strains using tissue-specific recombinase strains and have done Mendelian Crosses with mice in addition to genotyping them.
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

During the medical school application process, I received interview invites from 13 medical schools. From this process, I learned how to meticulously prepare for interviews. Of those that I interviewed with, most schools accepted me, and I received 3 waitlist offers. I am passionate about helping others achieve their dreams by doing well on their interviews!
MCAT

MCAT

I took the MCAT in summer 2023, where I received a score of 518, placing me in the 95th percentile. Since then, I have provided counseling for the MCAT for those in my community, and hope to continue to do so through private one-on-one tutoring.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I am an incoming M1 at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine beginning in fall of 2025, and after having gone through the medical school application process and reviewed others' personal statements in my own community this past year, I would love to continue doing so for other students!
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have been participating in public forum debate for 4 years now in the Montgomery County league. I was an octofinalist out of more than 150 teams in 2018, a semifinalist in 2019, and a quarter-finalist in 2020. I have great public speaking skills and debating skills as I have been participating in Model Congress and Model UN for 4 years now as well.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

At Yale I double majored in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology as well as the History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health. I wrote a thesis for both of these majors, and grew familiar with how to write a scientific thesis as well as how to write a history thesis!

Medical School Application Review

Dina has helped me look over both my personal statement and work/activities for my medical school applications (AMCAS and AACOMAS). She has done a tremendous job in thoroughly revising my writing and providing suggestions that help portray me as an applicant. I would highly recommend Dina if you need assistance with any medical school-related matters.
