I have taught Spanish to high school students at an independent school for the past 20 years. In addition to the classroom, I have done tutoring one-on-one with a variety of ages. I hold a BAS from the University of Pittsburgh (1998) and a TESOL certificate from UMBC (2014). I lived in Ecuador for a number of years as a volunteer with the Peace Corps (2000) and also taught English as a second language at the Fulbright Institute in Quito. More recently, I have earned a certificate in Oral Proficiency Interviews (2021) from the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and a distance learning/teaching certificate from the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (2020). I am currently a member of ACTFL, AATSP, and WorldWise Schools.
My approach to teaching has evolved over the years. My classes focus on comprehension and communication. With training in the method of comprehensible input from 2016 to 2018, I have implemented much of this approach in my classes and seen a positive response from students. I have also adopted curricula that focus on proficiency blended with traditional grammar. Students appreciate the focus on progress rather than perfection. My goal is to encourage students to continue their study of languages as they experience success and progress.
