Bio

I have over 20 years of experience teaching on the university level and advising students who are applying to arts based programs that require a portfolio. I’ve taught drawing, illustration, sculpture, portfolio development, design, architecture, interior design, product design and writing.

My style of teaching is to help you find the strengths that you already have, and to show you how to build upon them. From basic high school assignments, to advanced college projects, I’m here to help....

I have over 20 years of experience teaching on the university level and advising students who are applying to arts based programs that require a portfolio. I’ve taught drawing, illustration, sculpture, portfolio development, design, architecture, interior design, product design and writing.

My style of teaching is to help you find the strengths that you already have, and to show you how to build upon them. From basic high school assignments, to advanced college projects, I’m here to help. Additionally, there’s not an art college in North America that I’m unfamiliar with, so if you are working on a portfolio or writing an admissions essay, contact me.

I’ve spent over 20 years reviewing, editing, proofreading research papers, papers, and admissions essays. I’d be happy to help you by making suggestions on content, and fine-tuning your paper before it’s submitted.

I’ve done this for a long time and I love what I do. In addition to teaching fine arts, craft and multiple forms of design on a college level, I’m both an Architect and an Interior Designer, so I have (and still do) work in the field. In addition, I’ve completed extensive PhD coursework in Education with a focus on the affects of interdisciplinary arts-based learning in elementary schools.

After receiving a Bachelors Degree in Interior Design from a top ranking art college, I worked in the field then went on to receive a Masters Degree in Architecture. I've worked in both areas since 1990, and taught in both for over 20 years. Although i enjoy more traditional design projects, I focus mainly on humanitarian design, as well as researching how the built environment influences how children learn.

For over 20 years I've taught Drawing I, Drawing II, Design Drawing, Freehand Rendering, and Drawing for Portfolio Development on the college level. I have extensive experience in teaching students who are picking up a drawing pencil for the first time, and those who have made it their artistic focus. Drawing is the gateway to most visual art forms, and I'd be very happy to help you to use it as a tool for opening other doors.

I possess an extensive knowledge of all NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design) accredited colleges and universities, and I am well versed on the admissions requirements for any art, design, architecture or interior design institutions in the US or Canada that requires a portfolio of work for admissions considerations.

Richard is a gem of a teacher! He has been amazing, helping me with the portfolio process for college applications! He gives the best advice and provides me with a lot of insight through his own experience. Richard has been really helpful with keeping me on track and providing me with projects. He is not only very informed about all of the art schools in the US, but is also extremely knowledgeable about everything art related. I am incredibly fortunate to have found him!

Amazing, Knowledgeable Instructor

It was obvious from our first meeting that Richard really knows his stuff. He worked with my daughter on her AP Drawing portfolio. She’s resistant to trying new things, but he got her to work in her skills with charcoal, shading, lines, etc. I hope to have him work with her on her Sr. Portfolio for art schools. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their portfolio for college applications and AP classes.
