I have over 20 years of experience as an art, design and architecture professor. I’ve taught drawing, illustration, sculpture, design, architecture, interior design, product design, theory, set design, creative writing, and portfolio preparation. I am also a practicing architect, interior designer and artist. Additionally, my doctoral degree has yielded ongoing research within the areas of arts-based learning, humanitarian design, and portable/modular architecture. Having served as a director within a top-tiered art college, I possess an extensive measure of skill within the realm of undergraduate admissions. My diverse levels of expertise make me uniquely qualified to guide students through all the nuances of the undergraduate admissions process, particularly for programs that require specialized training and a portfolio of work.

There’s not an accredited art college or portfolio requiring program in North America (and much of Europe) that I’m unfamiliar with, and I’m also particularly skillful in working with transfer applicants, international students, and those who are applying for scholarships and bursaries. If students are comparing programs and in need of guidance, or are hoping to build a portfolio that helps open the doors to a top-tiered university, they can take comfort in knowing that I’ll be able to help.

The objective is to help students to build upon the strengths that they already have, but to also challenge them to reach new levels. Even if students are several years away from applying to schools, it’s incredibly important to meet early for at least a chat. These programs are extremely competitive, therefore, the more time that students can dedicate to developing and refining skills, the greater the chances will be of being admitted. I understand how complex this path can be and I’m here to assist parents as well.

I truly look forward to working with you.

Insightful, Patient Tutor

Richard has been incredibly insightful and patient with me throughout my college applications, despite being under an extremely tight time constraint. With each Wyzant lesson, I have learned more and more from him. But most importantly, it is apparent that he cares about his students. He is the best tutor I could ask for, and I feel extremely grateful that he was able to help me get into my dream university. Thank you, Richard. - Marcus

Richard is a good tutor.

Richard taught me how to use an architect ruler. He was very patient and very insightful. He also answered all of my questions. This was definitely a good experience.

Extremely knowledgeable and helpful

Richard spent some time with me discussing the ins and outs of applying to art school and building a portfolio. Given his background as well as his communication style, he's uniquely qualified as a consultant in these areas. Many thanks!

Great Tutor!

We were so fortunate to find Richard to help my daughter improve her college art portfolio. He made her think “outside the box”, and she created some extraordinary projects because of his guidance. He kept her on track, and he really helped her hone her skills and technique as well. He offered excellent advice regarding each college in which she was interested. She got into her top school, and Richard played a huge role as her inspiration, motivator, and mentor. We highly recommend him!

the best!!!

Richard is a gem of a teacher! He has been amazing, helping me with the portfolio process for college applications! He gives the best advice and provides me with a lot of insight through his own experience. Richard has been really helpful with keeping me on track and providing me with projects. He is not only very informed about all of the art schools in the US, but is also extremely knowledgeable about everything art related. I am incredibly fortunate to have found him!

Amazing, Knowledgeable Instructor

It was obvious from our first meeting that Richard really knows his stuff. He worked with my daughter on her AP Drawing portfolio. She’s resistant to trying new things, but he got her to work in her skills with charcoal, shading, lines, etc. I hope to have him work with her on her Sr. Portfolio for art schools. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their portfolio for college applications and AP classes.
