Bonjour! Je m'appelle Madeleine and I am so happy to meet you!

I offer private, semi-private, and group French lessons for adults online via Zoom. I have developed my own curriculum of 7+ levels to meet the needs and goals of all students and prepare them for real situations in the French-speaking world. Private and semi-private lessons also include conversation hours for students to meet other Francophiles and put their skills into practice.

I hold a Master's Degree in World Language Pedagogy, focusing on helping adult students build practical and conversational skills, no matter their background or ability level. As a near-native speaker who has spent years learning French myself, I have a unique understanding of the language learning experience. I emphasize accessible learning and make sure all of my lessons are 100% comprehensible.

Ear Training

Ear Training

I am a classically trained pianist with 12+ years teaching various genres of music, including sight reading, ear training, and performance musicianship. I specialize in helping students of all ages develop their relative pitch and those with perfect pitch be able to identify more complex measures. All musicians with perfect pitch eventually lose their skills with age naturally, so I also help older adults learn how to reimagine their musicianship through relative pitch.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

As a teaching assistant in France during the academic year 2014-2015, I instructed middle school classes in English phonetics, grammar, and conversation. My students were encouraged to use only English in the classroom in order to improve their pronunciation, broaden their vocabulary, and be able to express themselves effectively in their second language. As a linguist, I also focus on language strategies that will benefit students in any language they seek to learn, English or otherwise.
French

French

As a French and linguistics graduate of UMD, I have a solid background in French culture and literature, as well as near-native fluency. I lived in France where I was immersed in the language and culture, and taught ESL to middle school students. In the States during the past year, I worked as an elementary school French teacher to introduce children to a foreign language culture in a Title I IB school. I look forward to earning my M.Ed. and teaching certification in French, Pre-K to 12th in 2018.
Linguistics

Linguistics

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and French at the University of Maryland in 2014. I wrote my undergraduate thesis in comparative syntax and the acquisition of F1 Romance languages. Since then, I have applied linguistics to teaching language and tutoring in English and French linguistics.
Music History

Music History

As a classically-trained music teacher, I have a solid academic background in both classical and modern music history. I offer tutoring for your assignments in Western music from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, helping you situate the music in its respective era. We can explore the instruments, politics, and cultures of each time period so you can accurately understand the sounds and musical changes of each age.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I am a classically-trained music teacher with a strong academic background in music theory. Whether it is advanced music theory for classical or rock musicians, or simply general questions about rhythm and notation, let me help you demystify the numbers and signs of music so they seem less like a foreign language and more like the universal and natural patterns that they are.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I am a graduate student, linguist, and language teacher with a decade of experience in proofreading college writing, from persuasive essays to research papers. I primarily have knowledge of APA format, but am also familiar with MLA.

I have helped my students with phonics, vocabulary building, grammar, reading comprehension, essay writing, and test preparation. I especially working with students who are neurodivergent (i.e., ADHD, ASD, dyslexia). No matter your child’s age or grade, I can help!
