I have a PhD in particle physics from the University of Maryland at College Park and many years' experience in industry. I have taught recitation sections in physics at UMCP and college algebra at University of Maryland University College. I won an Outstanding Teaching award at UMCP. I have also provided a lot of assistance to my 13 year-old son in his math education. My approach to teaching is intuitive. I like to guide students with questions to help them develop their own understanding. While I do have a strong mathematical background, I'm not going to overwhelm you with things you won't understand. We'll work together in a relaxed way and you won't find yourself the least bit intimidated. I'll help you overcome any math anxiety you might be feeling and to feel confident in yourself. We can work on math and science at any level and if you want to prepare for SAT's we can do that too. If you hate math/science I'm not saying I have some magic power that will make you like it. But our sessions will be enjoyable and you won't be dreading them.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have taught college algebra at the University of Maryland, University College.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have taught college-level algebra at the University of Maryland University College.
Calculus

Calculus

I have a PhD in particle theory and have used calculus extensively in my graduate education and career in electromagnetics. It is second nature to me and I can provide students with an intuitive understanding. I am the author of solutions to Maxwell's equations in non-orthogonal coordinate systems
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I have spent more than 25 years in my career designing, developing and programming computer codes for electromagnetics applications. I have been principal author of codes to address problems such as aircraft inter-antenna coupling and radiowave propagation in urban environments. I can code in C++ and FORTRAN
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I have a PhD in particle physics with graduate with a graduate minor in mathematics including courses in simple differential equations and partial differential equations. I am the author of novel solutions to electromagnetics problems expressed as partial differential equations in arbitrary curvilinear coordinates.
Fortran

Fortran

I have worked extensively with FORTRAN codes in my career. I have designed and coded electromagnetics applications software in FORTRAN. I have written numerous stand-alone FORTRAN utilities, and FORTRAN components of large multi-language codes.
Geometry

Geometry

I have done a lot of work in designing codes for analysis of radiowave propagation over aircraft and ship surfaces. This work is highly geometrical and has given me a very strong background in elementary and advanced geometrical techniques.
GRE

GRE

I scored 820 in math, 730 in verbal. I have exceptional facility with GRE-type standardized test questions and have made outstanding scores on the GRE as well as other similar tests. I have a PhD in particle physics and worked for many years in the intensively mathematical subject of electromagnetics. I have published a number of papers in recognized journals, so I claim excellent writing skills. I am a phi beta kappa graduate of MIT, because I possess strong verbal as well as mathematical skills.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I took linear algebra as an undergraduate at MIT and received an A grade. I have a PhD in particle theory. Linear algebra is important for Solutions to the Schrodinger Equation may be regarded as vectors in the space of functions. I have extensive familiarity with quantum theory, and the mathematics of linear algebra is essential to it.. I have also used linear algebra professionally. I am the author of a computer code written for the DoD that computes optimal array weights for an adaptive array antenna operating in a desired-signal, interfering-signal, and noise environment. The mathematics behind this code is linear algebra.
Physics

Physics

I graduated phi beta kappa from MIT with a BS in physics. I have a master's and PhD in physics from the University of Maryland at College Park. I taught recitation and laboratory sections for a number of years in my graduate career. I received an award as an outstanding teaching assistant.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have taught college algebra for the University of Maryland University College
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have taught college level algebra (through precalculus) at the University of Maryland, University College.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I scored 777 pre-recentering and 820 on GRE math. I have taught mathematics at the college level and used mathematics extensively in my career. I will have a complete understanding of most SAT/GRE questions and will be able to guide students in solving by themselves.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I scored in the 700's on the verbal portion of the SAT and GRE.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

In my work in industry I have been the primary designer/developer for a number of computer programs for electromagnetics applications. These programs do things like tracing rays over aircraft and ship bodies and through cities. They make very extensive use of geometry and trigonometry, so I have great facility with these subjects.

The Best Tutor

Mr. Paul is the best tutoring instructor that I ever met. For it to be my first time having a tutor, this is a good experience for me. Mr. Paul is very punctual, respectable and very tolerant. When he teaches, he takes his time. I been out of school for over 24 yrs. And I know that I got one of the best instructors out there. Please not to hurt somebody's feelings, I know that there are a lot of good instructors out there, but I got one of the good ones. I will recommend Mr. Paul to anyone. His professionalism makes him stand out among others instructors.

Knowledgeable tutor who can clearly convey concepts.

Paul has been helping my daughter with Advanced Algebra. He is able to explain the concepts clearly and has helped her worked through her mistakes but on tests. I think this will help her to do well on her midterm exam.

Excellent Tutor

Paul is an excellent tutor. My daughter is now doing very in physics. Prior to working with Paul, she was struggling.

Not a good fit

Paul did not accomplish task with regards to tutoring our daughter. She needed someone to review the concepts in oscillations and waves and he completed some of the problems, others he was unsure on how to do, he left blank. This approach of the tutor completing the assignment might work for some, but our daughter would like to be able to solve the problems on her own. Nice person, but not the right tutor for us.

Awesome Tutor!!!

Professor Paul H. is an outstanding tutor. He is extremely patient also very easy to reach and willing to show up to tutor you at a drop of a second. He explains the subject matter you wouldn't normally think of making problems easier and less time consuming. I highly recommend him as a tutor.
