I possess hands-on experience having spent 7 years in the Military and Steel bands and Corp of Drums. There I was exposed to and made great use of the opportunity to gain expertise on those instruments.
My 8 plus years of teaching at a high school was very successful as our school was renown for it's music excellence. Certification from the ABRSM, London, also bears testimony of my competence.
My experience working with my own kids and their friends in Maths and English areas has given me the confidence in being resourceful in these areas. I believe that if my students fail I've also failed. honestly, this feeling I've never felt. All three of my princesses are teachers.
I've also worked with members of dancehall bands, I myself being a member for 4 years; arranging for the brass section and playing trumpet. for 35 years I played keyboard/piano for 6 churches; also trained members who were able to continue after I moved on. I'm still in the profession because of my love for it and for the successes we've (students & teacher) had. I specialize in teaching elementary piano, (playing by music) and also playing by ear. I love foundational work and believe that once that's firm students can successfully build upon them. My 7 year old said to me one day, "Dad, every time I come to your house I learn something". I simply love to see kids learn and I love being part of the process. I also teach the B clarinet, E flat horn, baritone, euphonium, drumset and elementary rhythm guitar.
I'm also a song-writer/composer. My school took part in the annual national calypso competition, for which I wrote and composed; I also prepared students to perform the songs; again, my school was nationally recognized for it's talent.
My goal is to reach and teach as many students as I can, with my "must learn" style, of simply practicalizing my lessons, and making my students feel very comfortable, by affirmations, and building upon what I see in them.
