Whether you need help with math or writing, I will break complex work down to manageable lessons. I aim to show you how you can help yourself and gain confidence with success. My undergraduate degree in Journalism and Master's degree in Business Finance have given me the skills to both communicate and calculate.

When tutoring math, I show students how a step-by-step process can help break down the method behind the math. I've found it's better to do the math first by hand, working out each step along the way, before making heavy use of a calculator or spreadsheet. Technology is an integral part of our business and education world, but it's important to understand the behind the scenes math so you can later build and modify powerful spreadsheets.

If writing is your area of concern, I can help you become a better writer by developing a system with you to manage any writing assignment. Whether you have an essay or a term paper, we will work on covering key elements such as content development, opening and closing paragraphs, citations, and use of proper grammar. I encourage my students to email their current writing projects to me before we meet. Having that advance time helps us get started right away.

My professional background includes 25+ years working as a top researcher/writer for a major Fortune 100 financial services company and for the past three years, I have been a college finance instructor, in a classroom setting. Math has always been a favorite subject for me because I like working with metrics which help to analyze, track and evaluate the world around us. In high school, I was the youngest student in each math class since I took an advanced track, with straight A's through Calculus.

It's nice to meet in person but I am flexible to also working with you on-line.
I'm here for you!

I've been teaching college-level finance for three years and am very experienced at explaining the math basics needed to solve common problems such as compound interest, present value (PV), future value (FV), net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR) and the like. Many students benefit from a review or new instruction on basic math, exponents, percentages and calculating weighted averages and I can help you with that. I've got a Masters degree in Finance and have more than 30 years experience in the financial services sector.

Elementary Math

My qualifications for teaching elementary math are broad based and span many years. In elementary , junior high and high school, I was always in the most advanced math section and maintained a solid "A" throughout all my years at school. I have earned a Masters degree in finance, which requires mastery of applied business mathematics, including expanded use of exponents, algebra and statistics. I've taught college level finance for three years and have valuable experience learning how to break down complicated math into smaller, manageable lessons. I think it's always best to work a difficult problem by using simple numbers, such that you can "see" the answer and then go back and study and learn the methodology. Calculators are great tools, but one should be capable of doing those problems by hand before relying on a calculator or computer to do the work. I also scored a perfect 100% on the Wyzant qualifying math exam.

Writing

My qualifications as a writing tutor include academic, volunteer and work experience. I have a BA undergraduate Journalism degree and worked through college and beyond in varying capacities as an editorial assistant and public information officer. Within the financial services field, I have 25+ years experience doing research and writing. I volunteered as a teacher's helper when my own kids attended elementary school, and worked with students, one-on-one, to help each young writer improve writing skills. I was also recently selected to work part-time as an on-line writing tutor for a national educational training company.

Very patient and willing to help

Lynda was very nice and put a lot of effort into trying to help me with my homework assignment. She is very personable and responds very quickly to your emails. She would be a great tutor for someone that is having trouble understand finance concepts or needing any additional help with their class.

GREAT finance tutor

This is my first time taking a finance course so naturally, I had many questions. Lynda was very attentive to my needs and provided me with the theory as well as the steps that are needed to successfully answer a question. She also went above my expectations by providing me different resources so I can grasp the material better. I wish Lynda was my finance professor! I would definitely recommend Lynda to anyone seeking a quality finance tutor.

Consistently fantastic tutor and motivational coach

Lynda has been helping to unlock our daughter's potential as a student at the community college level for several months. We cannot overstate the positive difference she has made. Lynda prepares for each lesson and is extremely effective in helping our daughter to understand concepts and frameworks. As important, she has been a magnificent coach, helping to encourage and motivate our daughter and boost her confidence. Lynda tailors her approach each lesson, reinforcing and supplementing class material as needed. She has introduced invaluable strategies for planning, organizing, and preparing for assignments to keep the workload manageable. She has also been a valuable sounding board for our daughter in discussions about assigned readings, serving as a catalyst for creative thinking and effective writing. Lynda has consistently demonstrated a commitment to help our daughter learn and succeed. She really cares. When we first contacted her last Fall with an urgent need for help for an impending assignment, she rearranged her schedule to meet with our daughter the next day and helped to overcome both a mental roadblock and a lack of confidence that were preventing completion. Since then, she has been flexible with her schedule as needed, occasionally spending several unplanned hours at a time to ensure concepts are understood, and that a viable plan for completing assignments is designed and implemented.

Lynda is patient, knowledgeable teacher

I needed help with a Finance class, and Lynda knew just how to help me understand principles and terms. She is a big fan of working things out slowly with pencil and paper so you understand how problems should be set up, which is a great technique. She was quick to schedule a meeting, and was kind enough to suggest a location mid-way for both of us. Thanks Lynda for being so helpful!
