Hi, I'm Katie and I'm looking forward to working with you! I've always loved reading, which is why my undergraduate degree is in English and my Master's degree is in Education. As part of my Master's program I became a certified Reading Specialist, which is my current role in an elementary school. I work with small groups of students on phonics, decoding, and comprehension skills. I have been in my current role for six years and I love it. I previously worked at a PK-8 school for six years as a Student Support teacher where I provided extra academic support to small groups and individual students. In addition, I have received Orton Gillingham training.
I approach teaching with a mix of traditional activities, such as sound cards and blending boards, as well as with hands-on activities and games, such as reviewing sight words in a card game. I also incorporate students' interests into my activities whenever possible in order to make reading more accessible and fun. Overall, creating a joyful environment where students feel safe taking risks is the goal behind all of my methods and activities.
