Hi! My name is Donna. I'm a lawyer but am a tutor as well. I love learning, and I love teaching and sharing my knowledge. If you are having trouble with a subject, I would love to help you!

In college I majored in both Anthropology and Spanish. I also studied many other subjects including French, Russian, literature, art, government, and math. After college I attended law school and received my Juris Doctor degree. I have been a lawyer for over twenty years. During that time I have worked in different tutoring programs, some sponsored by churches and others by the public schools.

The most important attributes I possess which give me the ability to help students are enthusiasm, commitment, persistence and creativity.

The most important skills I have as a teacher/tutor are the ability to explain things in an interesting but clear way, and the ability to listen. I know what it is like to try to learn with a bad teacher, and I know how important and influential a good teacher or tutor can be in a student’s life. During my years as a student, I experienced the frustration that comes with trying to understand difficult concepts, and developed techniques for succeeding. I have tutored students of all ages in a variety of subjects, and developed the ability to clarify material and to explain things to make it easier for students to learn.

Let me help you!

Anthropology

Anthropology

Anthropology was my primary major in college. Although my concentration was in cultural anthropology, I also took courses in archaeology, physical anthropology, linguistics and sociology. In my field of law I often put my knowledge of sociology and cultural anthropology to use.
ASVAB

ASVAB

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a standardized test required for enlistment in the U.S. armed forces. One's score on this test can determine what jobs one can qualify for in the military, so it is desirable to get the highest score possible. The ASVAB is a multiple-choice exam, and is similar to the SAT in that it tests for reading comprehension, vocabulary, and math skills. I am certified to tutor many standardized tests, including SAT math, reading and writing, the PRAXIS exam, and the TOEFL exam. I am also certified to tutor math, including algebra and geometry. I am familiar with all of the topics tested on the ASVAB, and I can tutor students to take this test and do well on it.
Drawing

Drawing

I have taken many art classes and have learned a lot about the art of drawing. I have taken classes in perspective, life drawing, and still life. I have also used many media for drawing, including pencils, charcoal, chalk, pastels, markers, and pen and ink. I enjoy art and drawing and would love to help students with their drawing techniques.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

Children in these grades are trying to learn a lot of the basics, in reading, writing, vocabulary, math, and science. I have tutored all of these subjects and am certified by Wyzant to tutor them. I love working with children and know that a good tutor or a good teacher can make an enormous difference in a student's success in school. I am able to tutor children in kindergarten through sixth grade in almost any subject that they are studying, not only in the ones listed above but in Spanish, French, and art as well.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I am certified by WyzAnt to tutor elementary math, algebra and geometry. I have experience tutoring children in elementary math. My strength is demystifying math for my students and making it enjoyable.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored students of all ages in learning English. Having studied foreign languages myself for many years (Spanish, Latin, French, Russian) I know what it is like to learn a foreign language, and I know which techniques work better than others. In addition, in 2010 I took and passed both the Praxis I exam and the Praxis II exam for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). These are exams that aspiring teachers are required to take.
Painting

Painting

Over the years I have taken many painting classes. I enjoy painting immensely and have learned many techniques. I usually work in acrylics or watercolor. I know how to mix colors, use glazes, and other materials. I have created paintings on wood, canvas and ceramic.
Phonics

Phonics

Phonics is the relationship between sounds and their written equivalents (letters, groups of letters or words). This is the basis for teaching a student how to read and write. I am familiar with the English phonemes, and have experience teaching people to read and write. Further, I have taken, and passed, the PRAXIS II ESOL test, which required knowledge of phonics and the phonetic alphabet. English is my first language but I am fluent in Spanish, and have studied French and Russian. I know how to learn languages and how to teach them as well. Part and parcel of that is knowing the sounds (phonemes) used in a language and how to put those sounds on paper. I am able to tutor any student in phonics.
Praxis

Praxis

In 2010, I took, and passed, the Praxis I exam the first time. Subsequently, in July 2010, I took, and passed, the Praxis II exam for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
PSAT

PSAT

I am certified to tutor many standardized tests, including SAT math, reading and writing. The PSAT is essentially a practice test for the SAT, and measures the same sorts of skills including math problem-solving skills, reading skills and writing skills. During my student career I took, and scored highly on, the PSAT, the SAT, and the LSAT. More recently I took and passed the Praxis I test with an above-average score. I can tutor students to take this test and do well on it, which will in turn prepare them for the SAT.
Spanish

Spanish

I have a Bachelor's degree in Spanish and speak, read and write it fluently. I gained my fluency in part by living in Latin America. I use Spanish every day for work. I have successfully tutored many students in Spanish.
SSAT

SSAT

The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) is a multiple-choice aptitude test, in English, for students in grades 5-11 who are seeking admission to private school. The test consists of verbal, math (arithmetic, basic algebra and geometry) and reading comprehension sections. There is also an essay section of the test. As someone who has excelled academically, and has passed many standardized tests, I am well suited to tutor these subjects in such a way to prepare students to succeed with this test.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I can help students develop study plans and skills which will increase their chances of success. During my student career I developed good study skills, which allowed me to graduate in the upper 25% of my high school class, to successfully graduate from college with two majors, and to graduate from law school. I can work with students to find methods that work for them to learn and retain material.
TEAS

TEAS

I am certified to tutor many standardized tests, including SAT math, reading and writing, the PRAXIS exam, and the TOEFL exam. I am also certified by Wyzant to tutor physical science. The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is used as an entrance exam to nursing schools in the U.S. It is a multiple-choice exam, and is similar to the SAT and the ASVAB, especially in the language and math portions. It also has a portion on the life sciences, including basic physics, chemistry, and anatomy. I am familiar with all of the topics tested on the TEAS, and I can tutor students to take this test and do well on it.
