I have been a college chemistry professor for the last twenty years, teaching both general and organic chemistry. I have a Masters in Organic Chemistry from the University of Maryland, where I discovered my love of being an educator. I have taught classes face to face, online and virtually synchronous using many different platforms. Most of my online work with individual students has been through Teams, but I am familiar with other systems as well. My style is one of active learning, student engagement is critical to motivation and success and it is my general teaching philosophy.
When working with individual students, I make sure that their background is up to par is order to tackle their current difficulties with the subject matter. I take a conceptual approach as opposed to one of memorization. When I write tests and problems for my students, I use applied and critical thinking, expanding on the basic concepts introduced in class. I seldom instruct from slides or pre-done materials, instead taking a more interactive approach. This allows me to spend more or less time on a specific topic based on how the student or class is responding to my questions and problems.
I thoroughly enjoy working in education, both on an individual and classroom basis. I have worked with teenagers and adults of all ages and backgrounds and take pride when a student achieves the success they have sought after.
