Recent graduate from Yale University with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. Experience with peer-tutoring high-schoolers and college students in precalculus, calculus AB and BC, and Linear Algebra. I am passionate about learning, and really enjoy helping students become more confident in their own problem-solving skills.

Focused on math in high school and college, but have experience helping students of all levels think through mathematical ideas. Received a 2350 (2400 scale) on the SAT with an 800 on both the general math section and the math SAT 2, so can definitely help with test-prep on a college preparatory level. I Also have experience with Mathcounts competitions and the math Olympiad.

The undergraduate Math department at Yale was small and very collaborative so I have a lot of practice breaking down and explaining concepts, proofs, and problem solutions in a clear and efficient way. Perhaps the most important thing is that I find math endlessly fascinating and always strive to bring a certain amount of energy and lightheartedness to my teaching.

Chess is probably my greatest passion, and I've devoted long hours to both play and study over the last five years. On chess.com, the most popular chess website among titled players and amateurs alike, my rating is 2030, which puts me in the top 1.5 percent of chess players globally. I have coached a number of my friends up through the ranks--in one case from 1200 to 1700 in under a year, and in another from 700 to 1100 in a year and a half.

In teaching chess I put an emphasis on studying endgames and playing puzzles (or "tactics"). For openings I generally teach the French Defense against e4 and the London System with the white pieces, but I also encourage students to experiment widely with openings in casual games and learn to evaluate unusual positions. Most importantly I want my students to enjoy improving at chess, to not be too hard on themselves as they stumble along the way. Every lost game is a perfect lesson on how to win a future game.

I am a USCF tournament chess player, with OTB rating of 1550, chess.com blitz rating of 2030, lichess blitz rating of 2140. Haven't played in tournaments for a while so my otb rating is much lower than it should be, but chess.com is a valued site and ratings of > 2000 there are widely accepted to correspond to expert level in the USCF and FIDE rating systems. In fact I regularly encounter (and often win against) National Masters from around the world with chess.com ratings of 2000 or below. Expert on the incredibly versatile London System opening for white, and French Defense against e4 for black, but can also teach white e4 openings such as the Scotch gambit and alternate black responses such as the Sicilian dragon. Particularly skilled in playing and teaching endgames.

Friendly and Informational

He did a great job of teaching me how to get better, giving me more platforms to improve on, and tips to help in games. He had a lot of resources at the ready for almost every situation. On top of that, he was very sincere and friendly. I had a great time taking the lessons.

Personable and skilled

Theodore gave a chess lesson to my son (as a Christmas gift from me). My son was looking for a tutor to help him develop some higher skills and Theodore was personable and enjoyable as well as giving him some good skills to try out. I'm sure we'll be using him again.

Theodore did a first chess lesson with my 5 year old today. The guy is an absolute rockstar. Patient, engaging, clear. My daughter didn't want to leave at the end! Strongly recommend!!

Excellent tutor

Theo worked with my 11 yo son on his chess game. He did a wonderful job assessing his skills in a supportive way, and talking him through some new strategies for openings and closings. Very sharp yet very fun and accessible at the same time! We are definitely scheduling another lesson :)

Great lesson!

This was our first chess lesson for my 6 years old kid with Theodore. I really like his idea as for this first class: a quick and simple game and then an endgame to assess my kid’s level. Theo was patient and paused nicely and gave comments about “good” and “not good enough” movements my kid made. We are looking forward to having more lessons with Theo :-)

Knowledgeable and thorough tutor!

Theodore started with a very systematic approach to chess, going through different circumstances that eventually coincided with each other. This form of learning chess was incredibly helpful! After our first lesson I had already learned basic openings, and end game scenarios to use whenever. I would definitely recommend taking a lesson from Theodore!
