About Katie

I am a certified secondary school counselor and math teacher who previously worked as an 8th grade math teacher in Baltimore County. I specialize in Algebra I, pre-Algebra, consumer math, and other mid-level math courses. I am also experienced in computer tutoring, and can assist with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, and Outlook, as well as web applications like Gmail and Google Docs. I am patient and flexible; I will meet you where you are and help you to move forward!

I have Master's degrees in education from Lehigh University and Johns Hopkins University. In addition to my classroom teaching experience, I was a regular tutor at my schools' after school tutorial program, as well as a frequent Wyzant tutor. I am available for tutoring in most middle and high school subjects, specifically math. I am available to help review previous concepts, extend and practice current skills, and pre-teach upcoming content for increased confidence and mastery.

In addition to math, I am happy to work with students on study skills, test taking strategies, organization, and other school related "soft skills" that are so vital to school success. I have a background in school counseling and college admissions; I would be happy to work with students and families on the college search and application process, as well as answer questions related to financial aid.

Finally, I specialize in Praxis Core (formerly Praxis I) tutoring. Through content review and practice with a variety of test-taking strategies, I am able to help many aspiring teachers attain their credentials and begin their careers. I am available most afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

I can't wait to get started helping you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As an inclusion teacher, about half of my students are diagnosed with ADD or some other form of disability. I have developed a full range of strategies to sustain attention, break activities up into manageable segments, and engage students through technology and hands on activities.

Algebra 1

Having taught Algebra I for several years, I have in depth knowledge of the subject, as well as strategies for teaching it and helping students to understand the concepts. I am also well connected to resources for additional practice and exploration on the topics.

Career Development

In my current role, I work with a caseload of young people to develop career plans and take the steps necessary to achieve those goals. I am skilled in resume development, interviewing, and job searching, and I help my students to gain these skills through weekly professional development workshops that I develop and facilitate. I am highly connected to local training programs, educational opportunities, and career development resources.

College Counseling

I am a PA certified secondary school counselor, and have 1 year of experience as a high school counselor. In this role, I worked with students in grades 9 - 12 to discover college options, complete profiles to determine college match, counseled students and families regarding standardized test preparation and financial aid completion, edited and review college essays, and answers general college questions.

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is the primary email client at my job and I have attained a high level of proficiency with the program through daily use.

Microsoft Publisher

I use publisher regularly to design pamphlets and newsletters in my capacities as a school counselor and a teacher. I am comfortable working with templates and starting Publisher files from scratch.

Microsoft Windows

I am an active Microsoft Windows user both in my personal and professional life. I work with multiple Windows versions on different devices and I am adept at trouble-shooting, shortcuts, and other ease of access options.

I passed the Praxis I exam with scores of 185/190 (Reading), 183/190 (Writing) and 185/190 (Math). I have also passed the secondary Math Praxis II, School Guidance and Counseling Praxis II, and Elementary Education: Instructional Practices and Applications Praxis II exams.

Having taught pre-algebra for several years, I am very familiar with both the content and the strategies for teaching the content. I have a variety of explanations for most concepts, and always try to incorporate the "why" behind the math; conceptual learning sticks!

Social Studies

I work at my school's after school tutoring program, working with middle school students on their homework, including social studies. I also regularly cover for social studies teachers in my schools, presenting their lessons. This is also an area of interest of mine, and I regularly read books and watch educational shows on the subject.
