Life is full of surprises! Sometimes they put you or a loved one behind the “educational 8 ball.” I am here to reassure you of success to overcome your educational challenges. I am a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University in natural sciences. In addition, I have my master’s in elementary education from Grand Canyon University.

I have been teaching many subjects in the public school systems for over four years. The subjects have ranged from math to computer technology. The experiences you will have with my programs are two-fold. First, is that you will gain a greater understanding of the subject matter. Secondly, you will be able retain more information in future classes by learning the techniques for educational maturity.

My success rates with those engaged in learning have been excellent. I have seen up to three grade level increases in subject matter over a six-month period. Some students in 40 days scored 60% higher on the MSA. The Common Core is now requiring the PAARC assessment. This is a computer driven testing situation. I would strongly incorporate this for any student that is in grades 3-12.

Each student will have a customized program designed for his or her aptitude. It is expected to have a strong commitment to work through the challenges.

We will work together parents, students, and teachers to achieve the success needed. It is up to the student to believe they can achieve.

I am a certified teacher with a master's degree in elementary education. In completing this degree, several classes in special needs were taught in which I received an A from Grand Canyon University: SPE-526 educating learners with special needs, SPE-533N advanced methodologies in English immersion. I have also been certified by Baltimore City Public Schools in special education long-term substitute. This requires the development of lessons plans, assessments, evaluations, and parent communications based on the Common Core. As a teacher, I am required to understand Individualized Education Plans, 504s and make modifications and accommodations for learning disabilities such as ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, and behavioral issues. I have been teaching for four years with students that have various disabilities. According to research acquired during my graduate work and while teaching in the classroom, it is critical to be able to reduce distractions, scaffold information, provide frequent breaks, check for understanding, and repeat directions. These are some of the guidelines under the NCLB Act of 2004 that I would be using. Additional research may be necessary given the background of the student.

Algebra 1

In elementary algebra letters are used to stand for numbers. For example, in the equation ax2+bx+c=0, the letters a, b, and c stand for various known constant numbers called coefficients and the letter x is an unknown variable number whose value depends on the values of a, b, and c and may be determined by solving the equation. Much of classical algebra is concerned with finding solutions to equations or systems of equations, i.e., finding the roots, or values of the unknowns, that upon substitution into the original equation will make it a numerical identity. For example, x=-2 is a root of x2-2x-8=0 because (-2)2-2(-2)-8=4+4-8=0; substitution will verify that x=4 is also a root of this equation. The goals for each grade are listed at http://www.mdk12.org/share/frameworks/CCSC_AlgebraI.pdf The predominate focus will be for the student to solve an equation by learning how to recognize how and when to substitute the equations for numbers and then be able to verify the solution by substituting the number into the original equation.

I am very familiar with this issue because I am dyslexic. I found out while attending The Johns Hopkins University. I have overcome most of the issue. However, there are new techniques being developed and I am staying up to date with the latest techniques. In addition, I am a certified teacher with a Master's degree in elementary education. I have been an intervention teacher for the past 3 years. My responsibility is to address academic deficiencies and create programs that would provide rapid growth. The grades that I have covered ranges from Pre-K to 8th grade. The subjects I have taught are Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Music, Art, and Technology. My specialty has been in the areas of Math, Science, and Technology. I use a combination of on-line simulations, rote work, and real world application to bring excitement and purpose to learning. Depending on the situation and background of the student will determine the approach I use. I prefer a thematic approach. This allows the student to understand the subject matter cross-curricula. For example, I had 5th graders to work on the Fibonacci series (9th grade work). They learned the history (social studies, reading, and language arts), learned the math, then observed it in nature (science), finally they drew the Nautilus pattern and colored it (art). This approach allowed each type of learner visual, auditory, and tactile/kinesthetic to shine and apply themselves to the project. In the end, the student has a full appreciation and knowledge of the subject matter.

Elementary math is fun and challenging. The foundations of operations, fractions, geometry, data, and measurements are the critical components for success. I have been teaching these areas for three years as an intervention teacher. This position has allowed me to work with students of diverse learning needs. The strategies employed are successful and have long term benefits. I expose my students to the higher levels of math so they are able to adapt quickly to the curriculum.
