I have a BFA in Studio Art, with a minor in Art History. I had always had an interest in writing, and in college we were required to follow rigorous writing requirements for our art history and elective literature course essays. This discipline developed my expository writing, proofreading and editing skills. Professionally, my proofreading and editing projects have expanded well beyond art history and literature when assisting students, academics and professionals with diverse essay subjects in history, nursing, science, engineering, journalism, international politics and more - for over 25 years.
I am a freelance translator, proofreader and editor, with 20 years of experience in various genres, including news articles, literature, grant applications, pitch decks and corporate reports. My English language skills can help you with any challenge: homework assignments, college application essays, creative writing, and corporate writing projects. Many of my students were (and are) speakers of English as a second language. For those of you who simply wish to improve your reading and writing skills, you can count on successful results . Many students have benefited from my approach. We cover grammar and syntax, focus on enhancing vocabulary, narrative flow and clarity of thought.
If conversational Hebrew is your goal, I lived in Israel for twenty years and am fluent in Modern Hebrew. I do not teach Bar/Bat Mitzvah prep. My Hebrew language students range from beginner through intermediate levels.
For art students, I can advise about building your portfolio for the purpose of applying to art college, and I can help with any assignment regarding art history. I can also advise about materials and techniques and suggest resources for finding the right materials for your artistic style.

Art History

Art History

Art history is a lifelong exploration for me. My curiosity extends to all eras and techniques. Art history is a powerful gateway to studying world history, as the topics are intertwined and inseparable. Historical context is just as important as the visual and emotional impact of art. I also specialize in explaining traditional and contemporary materials and techniques, which enriches understanding of the visual arts.
Art Theory

Art Theory

Focus on student's immediate need for guidance in this vast topic, on an as-need basis: historical timeline, geographic area, specific culture, mythical/religious background of imagery, bridging national history and art history, exploration of critiques of modern art, insight into materials and techniques within any era.
Drawing

Drawing

I have a bachelor of fine arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a major in drawing and printmaking and a minor in art history. My preferred media are charcoal, graphite, ink, and pastel. I specialize in portfolio development and helping students optimize personal self-expression.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I help ESOL students and professionals improve their written and spoken English skills. When needed, we cover grammar and syntax. We also work on improving vocabulary. English can be tricky - it has a lot of metaphors and colloquial expressions. We explore the roots of these confusing - though often amusing - expressions. Some students need to improve their technical language - we can work on specific vocabularies related to science, medicine, engineering, architecture, etc. Many students need help proofreading and editing essays. I explain "the how and why" of English so students can develop independent study skills going forward.
Hebrew

Hebrew

I lived in Israel for 20 years. I have worked as a freelance translator from Hebrew to English for over 30 years. I am proficient in teaching conversational modern Hebrew, reading, and grammar.
Literature

Literature

Literature is a great edifice of ideas, fascination and discovery. Studying literature will enhance your appreciation of all the arts. If you need help with assigned essays, or working on your own narratives, I can help out with a wide variety of subjects at any level.
Painting

Painting

I have a bachelor of fine arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a major in drawing and printmaking and a minor in art history. I focus on drawing in charcoal and pastel, and painting in oil and watercolor and have studied anatomy extensively. I am a figurative artist, but I like paint to look like paint.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have edited academic articles, commercial brochures and books for over 20 years. Let me help you sharpen your language skills and style by learning how to self-correct grammar and vocabulary.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

The English language is a complex and beautiful thing. I know what it's like to be a foreigner, having lived in 3 countries over 20 years. But, even native speakers struggle with content and meaning in English. Good vocabulary enhances your confidence, whether you are a native English speaker or non-native. Improving your vocabulary enhances your self-expression and the impression you make upon others.
Writing

Writing

Learning to write well takes practice. Learn to focus your thoughts with precision and style to fully exploit this important aspect of communication. Careers are made through good writing. Don't get left behind. Contact me to improve all aspects of your writing, whether for school assignments, work, or self-expression.

Encouraging and Positive

Deborah has been my tutor for almost two years now and has helped me with a wide range of subjects. She clearly cares and is always encouraging me to learn, not just complete an assignment. As someone who is completing an MBA program, she has helped me in all kinds of classes like analysis and portfolios, not just English and grammar. She is also constantly introducing new words and expressions into my vocabulary, as well as book recommendations to keep my mind sharp. Deborah is also very accommodating with scheduling.
