I completed a Bachelor's degree in statistics at North Carolina State University in May 2010, and proceeded to take a few graduate mathematics and statistics courses. Tutoring has been my primary focus since 2011. I have tutored mathematical subjects ranging from elementary math to calculus (univariate and multivariate), linear algebra, differential equations, abstract algebra, real/complex analysis, and advanced statistics courses (e.g. mathematical statistics, statistical inference, biostatistics, machine learning, advanced probability), with ages ranging from young children to nontraditional adult students. I have also tutored statistical programming using R, SAS, SPSS, and Minitab.

Aside from math and statistics, I have also taught guitar performance and music theory at the Burton School of Arts from 2008-2011.

I empathize with students who are frustrated with mathematical coursework and concepts, and incorporate a supportive manner in my teaching style. This applies especially to students with learning disabilities, or otherwise unique learning styles that may be less compatible with a traditional classroom learning environment. If you are frustrated and feel that you simply can't grasp these concepts, rest assured that it is possible, and having someone work one-on-one with you will help address your specific concerns and weaknesses.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I use algebra extensively, from basic arithmetical manipulations to abstract topics such as rings and fields. Like most mathematics courses, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 cover a wide range of material, but most of this material can be reduced to simple concepts. It is my experience that most people who struggle with mathematics courses do so because they are unclear on one or more fundamental concepts, and they quickly begin to feel more confident in their grasp of the overall course once these topics have been clarified.
Calculus

Calculus

I have used calculus, including multivariable and vector calculus, on a near daily basis for about 15 years. Calculus is the gateway to higher mathematics, physics, and engineering, but it can unfortunately be difficult to get through. I've had success in helping students master Calculus through real world, intuitive examples, carefully chosen exercises, and thorough clarification of the fundamental concepts.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra is the gateway to higher math, and plays a foundational role in topics ranging from statistical theory and data science/machine learning to quantum mechanics and general relativity. As such, this is a topic that I have spent a great deal of time studying and tutoring, so I know how to break down the abstract concepts in a way that appeals to student's intuition and interests. This can also be a very fun topic once you get past the basics, it's become one of my favorite topics to tutor.
LSAT

LSAT

LSAT preparation is an especially interesting topic for me to tutor, as it blends many of the skills I've been learning and teaching over the years. In particular, logical reasoning and proof-oriented thinking, advanced reading comprehension, and a more abstract understanding of language in general. I am also passionate about helping people begin their legal careers with the skills they need to succeed and thrive, and I hope you'll give me the opportunity to do that!
Probability

Probability

Probability theory is the mathematical field that I have probably spent the most time studying and tutoring, and I very much enjoy helping people reorient their intuition to overcome the difficulties that nearly everyone experiences when first exposed to this counterintuitive topic. I also emphasize real-world applications and interpretations that are relevant to decision-making at all levels.
Statistics

Statistics

I have a B.S. in Statistics from NCSU, and completed a year of graduate coursework in Statistics (also at NCSU). Naturally, this is one of my best subjects to tutor, and I have had success in helping many students from highly diverse backgrounds over the past several years. I try to help students see the social relevance of the subject, which is often overlooked in introductory classes, and which helps them to appreciate what they may initially perceive to be a boring and frustrating subject.

Incredibly knowledgeable, well-versed, a fantastic teacher

Ryan and I have been meeting for over 2 months now and it has truly transformed my relationship with math. As a PhD candidate, I have to utilize many different types of analyses and computational models and Ryan is extremely knowledgeable about every topic we discuss. Having the flexibility to jump from calculus, to linear algebra, to probability theory/statistics has meant I get exactly the right guidance and he's helped me integrate these fields into a cohesive narrative. Ryan is great at providing an intuition for abstract concepts and has made math of all sorts approachable and enjoyable. I will be continuing with Ryan for the foreseeable future!

Thank you Ryan!

Ryan is a great teacher! I was really frustrated and struggling with the topics we were covering in my Statistical Inference class. He was able to identify where my knowledge gaps were and helped me understand many of the concepts, particularly regarding hypothesis testing and p-values. His clear explanations and examples made these complex topics more accessible, enabling me to get my head around finding p-values in determining statistical significance and making informed decisions in hypothesis testing.

Consistent Support

Not enough can be said about how instrumental Ryan has been in getting me through my Abstract Linear Algebra course. I was really struggling when I reached out originally. He was able to meet me where I was at and build on foundational concepts that gave me the mathematical knowledge needed to get through the semester. I will always be grateful. He will be the first I reach out to in the future if I get stuck again. His knowledge and patience have made a big difference and I recommend working with him if you are in need of support.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

He is very good at explaining the problem at my level and goes through each step one by one. He is knowledgeable and very patient. If you need some math help, take his lesson.

Patient Stats teacher

I really appreciate his kindness and how clear he was with his explanation of the material! I have gone to office hours, our math lab and nothing has been as clear as Ryan was, today. Thank you!

Awesome all around

Super helpful, and took his time explaining the things that I was confused about in a precise way that didn’t use impossible language to understand. Was also very flexible with time and understanding.

excellent teacher

Really broke down the concepts into steps I could follow and understand. Patient approach. Willing to put in extra time to help me. Will definitely use him again.

Thank You

Max felt that the session went well and said that you explained things in a concise and clear way. He also asked that maybe in the future you could leave him with some problems to work with at home in between visits?? Thanks again and let me know about what day next week ( Mon-we’d) works best for you?

Expert

Ryan is an expert in his field. Couldn't have done my work without him. We cover statistics and programing in R. I have never used R before and he helped me line by line understand what each command was used for.

Calculus 3

Ryan is an excellent tutor. My two children, ages 17 and 20, have nothing but positive things to say about him. He explains Calculus in a way that makes sense to them and he works hard to discover exactly where they need help.
