About Meredith

Educational background:

I received my B.S. in Biology with a minor in Physical Science (physics and chemistry) from Bob Jones University in 2005.

Work experience:

I have worked as a tutor and teacher for 12 years. During my college career, I tutored college students in biology, chemistry, and algebra. I also tutored high school algebra, chemistry, and biology while I pursued my undergraduate education.

After I received my Bachelor's degree, I worked for one year as a high school algebra, chemistry, physics, and physical science teacher for students in 8th-12th grade. I also worked as an after school tutor for 2nd through 12th graders in math and chemistry.

I have extensive experience working with children and adults with special needs. I have worked with individuals who have disabilities and special needs for 14 years in roles including camp counselor, lifeguard, in home support specialist, respite care provider, horseback riding instructor, teacher, and tutor.

I have several years of experience with the IEP process for students with special needs and I greatly enjoy working with children and teenagers with special needs who have focus and attention issues as well as handwriting problems. I am pursuing certification as a handwriting specialist through Handwriting Without Tears for pre-k through cursive handwriting development.

I am also certified at the registered level through the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) as a therapeutic horseback riding instructor, and I have extensive experience working with children and adults with autism, brain injury, cerebral palsy, and developmental disabilities.

Teaching style:

I use a multi-faceted teaching style, realizing that every student is different and every student's needs are unique. I have found through my experience that it is best to combine visual, auditory, and hands-on, experiential teaching methods in order to provide a teaching and learning experience that will grasp the attention of the child and help him or her to retain the learning for life rather than just memorizing it for a test or for one class. Learning is meant to be retained and to be utilized in building skills for life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have taken the ASVAB and have assisted many students in preparing to take the ASVAB when I was working as a high school math and science teacher. Four areas make up the score for the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) - Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge. I have taught and tutored all of these specific subject areas for 8 years, and I will be happy to work with you as you prepare to take the ASVAB and to enter a career in the military.

Bible Studies

I have been studying the Bible by independent study for over 10 years, and I went to Bible college for 4 years. I have taken specific classes in Old Testament, New Testament, the teachings of Christ, the teachings of Paul, Romans, Acts, Bible Doctrines, Modern Cults as they relate to the Bible, Biblical perspectives on marriage, and Biblical womanhood. I am constantly involved in continuing education and personal Bible study. I am involved in teaching and discipling youth (age 14-18) in biblical principles on a weekly basis.

I have experience with several Bible translations, including the King James Version, New King James Version, New International Version, English Standard Version, The Amplified Bible, and The Message. I commit to understanding the differences between these translations and to always referring back to the Greek and Hebrew for final interpretation of the scripture.

I believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and that it is profitable not only for the addition of knowledge but for the development of a living relationship with a living God who came to earth in human form to die for the sin of mankind and who rose from the dead, taking our sin and giving those who trust Him as their personal Savior victory over death, eternal life, and a personal relationship with Him.

I have tutored middle school through graduate level chemistry for 13 years. I specialize in adapting my teaching to students’ learning needs, emphasizing math skills, study skills, and visual learning methods. I would love to partner with you to help you excel in the foundations of inorganic chemistry, including balancing equations, stoichiometry, acid-base reactions, titrations, gas laws, and more.

Elementary (K-6th)

I enjoy tutoring and teaching elementary age children because the skills that they learn at this young age will be the foundation for learning for the rest of their lives. I realize the importance of a sensory, experiential learning environment for young children and I adapt my teaching style to meet the individual needs of each child. I have experience tutoring students age 3 through college age, both with and without special needs. I enjoy working with children who have speech and language difficulties, and I emphasize good study habits and the importance of using all life experiences as a time for learning. I can comfortably and confidently teach math, science, reading, writing, and a variety of other elementary level subjects. I strive in every lesson to make learning fun and to instill in children a love of learning... not just for the moment, but for a lifetime.

I have taught conversational english as a second language to Chinese exchange students for two years through PeopleLink, a foreign exchange program. In addition, I also taught and tutored Korean students ages 10-18 for two years in English, math, and science. I am constantly studying other languages and cultures to become more proficient in them. I excel at grammar and composition of the English language, and I especially enjoy teaching students using a holistic method involving book work, conversational work, and experiential learning by emphasizing using english in everyday life at the store, at work, and when spending time with others.

I have played the flute for over 20 years, and I am passionate about passing along my love for this instrument, especially to young students. I teach solo, small group, and band techniques, and I emphasize the importance of sight reading and ear training along with all lessons for well rounded musical development. With young children (under 10), I begin lessons using the fife, penny whistle, or recorder and moving to the flute over time. I am looking forward to playing music with you and helping you become a more accomplished musician!

Special Needs

I have 10 years of experience working with children and adults with special needs. I have worked as a camp counselor, respite care provider, individual support specialist, Special Olympics coach, autism instructor, horseback riding instructor, math and science teacher, and tutor to children and adults of varying ages and disabilities.

I have 5 years of experience implementing IEP goals and helping students to adapt their study and learning habits in order to succeed in learning, not only for classroom and test knowledge, but for lifelong learning and skill acquisition.

I provide tutoring and study skills help for individuals in pre-kindergarten through adults in all subjects, including english, handwriting, reading, math (elementary through algebra), and science.

The TEAS V is a test structured to help nursing admissions staff determine future success of nursing school applicants. This test has 5 sections: Mathematics, Reading, Science, English, and Language Usage. As a TEAS tutor, I will help you with study techniques and core knowledge in each of these subject areas. I have been tutoring test preparation in all of the TEAS subject areas for over 10 years, and I teach in a way that helps you to use your current knowledge to build a solid foundation in academic skill, both for success on the TEAS and in your future academic career!
