I'm an author, illustrator, and multidisciplinary artist and educator. I received my BFA in Illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2017 and have since exhibited my publications and art at trade shows and galleries across North America. I have done author visits at middle and high schools in Washington DC, New York City, and taught free community-based workshops for all ages in those cities as well as during my time at artist residencies and comic art festivals in cities like Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and more. Locally I work with independent spaces such as Baltimore Clayworks, the Baltimore Free School at Red Emma's in Waverly, and Chesapeake Arts Center. I've also taught through the Baltimore Museum of Art, Blue Light Junction, and Arts For Learning Maryland's Summer Arts Learning Academy at Walter P. Carter Middle Elementary School.
My approach to teaching art is highly personalized, flexible, and attuned to the needs of the student. I'm inspired by Lynda Barry's pedagogy/andragogy (adult learning) where she sees drawing and creative expression as innately human and like a instinctual language that children can access before they are socialized into shame and insecurity over "being bad at drawing." As an adult learner myself, I have been retraining my own muscle memory in things I have not done since I was a child, like in music with singing and playing instruments or physical activities like martial arts and figure skating (which I had limited experience with in my youth). It has reframed my understanding of my skills as a visual artist in the sense that I have committed my entire lifetime to training my eye, hand, and mind to bring me to the level of artistic ability and emotional awareness that I have today.
I am interested and experienced in teaching students of all ages and skill levels. I can teach fundamentals and advanced techniques in drawing, painting, multimedia, digital programs for art, comics creation, and more.
