Hi! I'm Elizabeth, a graduate from UNC Chapel Hill with a BS in Neuroscience and a second major in Chemistry. As an undergraduate, I developed a passion for working with students working as an undergraduate learning assistant in college level chemistry courses, specifically organic chemistry. In this role, I worked with students both individually and in group review sessions to gain a strong understanding of the "why" behind difficult scientific topics. As a part of this role, I was also trained in science-based teaching approaches and study strategies, and aim to employ proven methods of learning when working with students. In addition to my experience with organic chemistry, I was highly successful in general chemistry, biochemistry, and neuroscience courses, and I have experience tutoring all of these to peers throughout college.
When working with students, I believe in building a strong foundational knowledge of the subject at hand, and working with students to learn how to apply core concepts to more complex, exam-level problems. As a tutor, I aim to not just relay information that can be found in a textbook, but collaborate with the student to build a strategy that can be utilized towards new and unfamiliar types of problems, preparing them for a variety of questions that can be thrown their way on exam day. My approach to tutoring is strongly student-centered, and involves taking the time to construct a good rapport with students and build a trusting environment where it's okay to struggle in the process of learning. Ultimately, my goal as a tutor is to take the the anxiety and fear away that many come to associate with difficult science courses and take the time to cultivate a deep understanding of the course material that students can use to not only succeed in their coursework, but build their confidence as a student and as a scientist.
