Hi everyone! My name is Devin, and I am currently a medical student at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh. Because I was guided by great mentors and advisors, I'm driven to become a tutor and pay forward the invaluable guidance I've received. While neuroscience is my specialty, I'm excited to be a knowledgeable guide across subjects, with a particular passion for the sciences.
During my undergraduate years, I gained extensive experience as a teaching assistant for neuroscience courses ranging from introductory to advanced levels. I also helped freshmen smoothly transition from high school through a dedicated course. Complementing my academic roles, I served as the president of a club providing tutoring to low-income K-12 students, exposing me to a diverse range of subjects and learning styles.
My tutoring approach centers around establishing clear goals at the start of each session and consistently revisiting them to ensure the student's objectives are met. I firmly believe in active learning, emphasizing hands-on experience and problem-solving, as numerous studies demonstrate its efficacy in promoting long-lasting knowledge retention. As a tutor, I'll incorporate techniques like posing thought-provoking questions, providing knowledge checks, and encouraging students to work through problems actively, fostering an engaging learning environment.
Throughout my academic journey, I've witnessed firsthand the profound impact of active learning, even in medical school. The concepts that stick the most are those our professors challenge us to grapple with actively, solidifying our understanding through practical application.
With an unwavering commitment to helping students reach their full potential and a genuine passion for education, I hope to make a meaningful difference. I look forward to working together to create an enriching, successful learning experience!
