Hello! My name is James, and I am an enthusiastic and passionate tutor with 8+ years of experience tutoring. I am currently a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, and I also hold a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor's degree in Physics and Neurobiology from Georgetown University. My tutoring journey began while I was in high school, where I taught piano and guitar to middle school students. During that time, I found that I had a genuine passion for teaching and sharing my knowledge. I had the privilege to continue tutoring in college, serving as a teaching assistant for several physics courses at Georgetown. As a graduate student, I have served as a teaching assistant for several graduate-level engineering courses at Johns Hopkins.
As a student and a tutor, I have found that communication is often one of the biggest hurdles in learning or teaching a subject. Accordingly, I take a personalized approach to tutoring and prioritize effective communication to best understand where my students are struggling. I do this by first establishing what part of a problem the student already understands, then I figure out where the student encounters roadblocks. From there, we overcome the roadblocks by breaking down complex problems into smaller, intuitive parts to make them more digestible. I have tutored students both one-on-one and in large groups, and I have found my approach to be adaptable to both. Tutoring is incredibly rewarding for me, and I enjoy helping students make tangible progress.
I have tutored dozens of students ranging from the middle school level to the graduate school level. The subjects I have tutored include math (e.g. Algebra, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations), physics (e.g. Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Biophysics), and engineering (e.g. Control Theory, Observer Theory, Dynamics).
If you think I would be a good fit as your tutor or if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out!
