Dear potential students,

I can't wait to meet you!

First and foremost, I am a trained Orton Gillingham tutor with ten (+) years of experience working with students affected by dyslexia, dysgraphia, language processing disorders, and other language based learning disabilities. Additionally, I have worked for over ten years with children on the autism spectrum and children diagnosed with ADHD. I am an avid writer and skilled with assisting students in revising papers, brainstorming theses, and improving their overall writing quality. In terms of qualifications, I have my Masters of Leadership in teaching and am certified through the state of Maryland in Elementary Education and Special Education with an endorsement of middle school English. I hold a BA from Loyola in Maryland where I majored in Writing with a minor in English. I am well-versed in proofreading and editing academic writing, should these services be pertinent to any potential students.

On a more personal level, I am a quiet, gentle person who enjoys reading and relaxing at home with my rescue dogs and my baby boy. I also love to cook! You will never feel pressure should you choose to work with me. I am told by past coworkers and administrators that I have a calming presence that makes new students feel comfortable.

In terms of tutoring, I love the feeling of being able to teach a client something in a way that aligns with his or her learning style. It's so gratifying to watch someone experience that light bulb moment after the information is presented in a new way. I have confidence in systematic, diagnostic teaching and know that I am capable of delivering it in a way that it works.

My most recent teaching experience was working at a private school for dyslexia for five years. There, I taught literature for the first year, then I spent my days doing one-on-one tutoring in Orton Gillingham, LiPs, Megawords, SLT, Wordly Wise, and Visualizing/ Verbalizing.

Knowledgeable, Organized, Creative, and KIND.

Our son has been working with Kelly for several months now and the progress that he has made is incredible. Kelly is organized and thorough with her lesson plans and delivery. She always puts in detailed notes about each lesson which includes areas where he did well and areas that will be focused on for the upcoming sessions. She is incredibly kind and patient. We had never heard of WYZANT before, but finding Kelly on a whim through WYZANT and reading her bio was enough for us and it was the best decision for our son. She’s fantastic! His reading scores in school have improved significantly.

Awesome tutor

We have worked with Kelly for a couple of months now. Of all the tutors we have had, Kelly impressed me from day one by asking what kind of things my kid likes. She not only asked the question but she then took the time to craft her lesson material to cater to his interests. She consistently tailored her materials to meet his interests to this day. I love how my kid's face lights up so excitedly when he sees them. She also provides a very calm and positive environment for learning. We recommend her highly.

Knowledgeable, resourceful, patient, kind, and all-around fantastic.

We noticed our son had not shown interest in reading pretty much any style of books and also had trouble with spelling and reading comprehension for many years since around 2nd grade, and now he just turned fourteen. Even after bringing this to the attention of his special education team at his public school (and even after sending him to a private school for a bit), no one was able and/or willing to either listen to our concerns as parents for our son or delve deeper into the problem. After paying out-of-pocket for a private neuropsychological evaluation, we were told that our son did have some problems with reading comprehension and phonics, and that a certified Orton Gillingham tutor would be best for him. Enter Kelly! We told her exactly what I wrote above, plus that he was entering 9th grade in a private school and had summer reading books that were required. I also told Kelly that we had just completed that new neuropsychological evaluation but were waiting for our son’s psychologist to finalize it and send it over to us. We told Kelly that we were looking for an OG tutor and someone to help Sam with phonics, reading comprehension, and his summer reading. After reading Kelly’s reviews from previous parents and also reading her CV, it was quite clear that not only was see insanely qualified, but that every parent and student has been more than happy with their tutoring sessions. Kelly has been nothing but fantastic so far! With the two lessons that we have had, her feedback has been extremely valuable - both to Sam and to us as parents. Sam looks forward to meeting with her, and reading has already started to become easier. Thank you, Kelly!

Excellent Tutor

Kelly truly lives up to her gleaming profile or experience. Her sessions are always very organized and purposeful. She takes a child's strengths and weaknesses and designs a programs specifically for where they need help, unlike other very rigid/scripted Orton Gillingham based programs. Her feedback to my son has always supported him while building confidence. She send home detailed review notes and we were able to get some fun homework to build stronger pathways for reading and spelling. As a therapist in allied health (related field), I highly respect and can identify how much effort she puts into creating engaging lessons. My son already loves working with Kelly.

Kelly H is wonderful!

My son has been working with Kelly for a couple years now. He has a learning disability and was reading below grade level. Thanks for Kelly's knowledge, dedication, patience, and understanding my son is now reading on-grade level. I was so happy we found her especially during covid and virtual learning. I truly believe the only reason my son was able to move up to on-grade level reading was due to Kelly's knowledge and building his reading skills up from the very basic level to more complex skills. Every so often she does another assessment to make sure we are still on the right track. I feel she is very invested in my son's well being and provides recommendations to help him improve. Not only has my son's reading ability improved but his confidence also has. Kelly provides a detailed summary of their lesson at the end of each session. I find this very useful so I am aware of exactly what skills they are working on. My son enjoys working with her!
