I’m Juan, and I've been a math tutor for over a decade and I’m a full time engineer for the DoD. I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from Florida International University with a minor in applied mathematics. I have completed most of a Master's in Mechanical Engineering that I'm working on getting funding to finish and have started work on a second Master's in Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. Eventually, I plan to acquire an MBA on top of it all. Taking it back to high school, I was an IB student who overloaded on AP courses as well, and graduated top 10% (Magna Cum Laude) from a class of over 1000 students. I helped create an IB tutoring group as a volunteer project where I was the sole math tutor.
My journey into becoming a tutor really started when I was in my first year of college in 2011. At the time, some friends from high school transitioned into becoming STEM majors; unfortunately, the mathematics they took ill-prepared them for college. I took the initiative to teach them myself. From there, I fell in love with helping students and made tutoring my hobby/part time job. Unlike other tutors, I have gracefully failed many times. I understand what it's like to feel suffocated by a subject. Luckily over the years, I've learned a multitude of study techniques and intense discipline that has aided me in becoming highly successful both in my personal life and in helping other students. My specialties are algebra and calculus and they're the subjects that I've taught the most, though I can do others too, like physics and engineering courses. I always make time for students and personalize lessons because everyone has different needs. My tutoring philosophy for mathematics combines both a practical and conceptual view that has helped me see students gain confidence and better grades/understanding.
