My favorite part of teaching has always been watching a student suddenly take off with a skill, sometimes after hours or weeks of slow progress. The joy and pride a child feels when they “get it,” when their hard work starts to pay off, is exciting and rewarding. The first part of my job as a tutor is to convince students that “Smart is not something you are. Smart is something you get.” Also known as a “growth mindset,” this belief can drive students to keep trying and keep working when faced with a challenging task. My job is to set tasks that are just hard enough to meet a student where they are now and take them to the next level. I believe that if students get the right kind of instruction, and understand their role in improving their skills, they can learn almost anything!

I am currently a special education teacher teaching students with learning disabilities in grades K-8. I have worked with many different types of students, including honors students in high school, students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders.

I have training in Orton-Gillingham reading instruction, which is the underlying philosophy used by Wilson Reading, Fundations, and other recommended phonics interventions. I use an eclectic approach of strategies for reading instruction, with the goal of building on a student's knowledge and strengths, giving them a firm foundation of core skills and strategies, and growing their interest and confidence in reading and writing. I strive to bring fun and excitement to students' learning about reading, writing and literature.

I look forward to hearing you and discussing your reading and writing needs.

Approved Subjects

Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have completed three levels of Orton-Gillingham certification, each with a supervised practicum, from the Children's Dyslexia Center. I also hold a master's degree in special education and Massachusetts state licensure in moderate special education grades K-8. I work with students with dyslexia, including those with other learning needs, such as autism or ADHD.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a master's degree in special education from Lesley University. I am a Massachusetts-licensed teacher. My license is Moderate Special Education, Grades K-8.
Phonics

Phonics

I am an Orton-Gillingham certified reading tutor. That means I am trained to teach phonics in an explicit systematic way. I use diagnostic teaching to determine what students know and build on it by teaching concepts in order. I make sure that students have mastered a concept before we move forward.
Reading

Reading

I am an Orton-Gillingham certified reading tutor. I also have a master's degree in special education and am a licensed special ed teacher. I have worked with students from beginning readers through advanced high school students looking to develop their comprehension. I use informal assessments to target students' specific needs in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. I use this information to develop a plan that means the student's specific needs.
Special Needs

Special Needs

For over 15 years, I have worked with children with a wide range of special needs. I have a master's degree in special education, as well as certification in Orton-Gillingham, a multi-sensory reading approach. As a special education teacher for the last 10 years, I have taught children in elementary and middle school with developmental delays, specific learning disabilities (including dyslexia), autism spectrum disorders and ADHD.
Spelling

Spelling

I am Orton-Gillingham certified, which includes training in the rules and patterns of English spelling. I teach kids the reasons behind English spellings, so they don't have to rely on memorizing each word.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I have a master's degree in special education. I am also a certified Orton-Gillingham reading tutor.
Writing

Writing

I have a master's degree in special education and 15 years of experience teaching and tutoring writing, to students from elementary school into college.

great patience and ability to adjust!

Beth has been great with our son. She is very quick to adjust the topic and/or session to get the most out of the time. She is extremely knowledgeable and insightful. My son has enjoyed each session and that is hard to do with him. Highly recommended!

Helping my son with AP Lit

My son is receptive to her guidance which is a big win! She provides a helpful follow up so I know what as covered and how it went. Very helpful - it makes the effort of having a tutor worthwhile for all involved - student, parent and tutor!

Outstanding Reading Teacher

I'm so excited to have found Beth to work with my son. He is behind in reading and we will spend the month of August hoping to boost his skills before school starts. If things work out, we will continue during the school year to keep him practicing. Thanks Beth. Glad to have found you.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Beth has been professional and timely for every reading session with my daughter. She makes well use of every hour and my daughter enjoys her visits. It is early on but I’m hopeful the sessions will help with my daughter’s reading struggles.
