I am in my fourth year of earning my PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In graduate school I have been a teaching assistant for courses ranging from MATLAB coding, Image Analysis, and Animal Surgery. I have 3 years of experience tutoring AP and College level Calculus I, Physics I, and Chemistry part time. My tutoring experience has been with 6 students ranging from 10th grade to college freshman in a 1 on 1 online format. The needs of my previous students included helping with homework, reviewing lecture notes and topics from class, and test prep.
My approach to tutoring is to focus on a student’s ability to critically think through and relate to a problem. I do this to build a student’s confidence in their ability to solve problems and conceptualize what is happening in them. One way that I build critical thinking skills is through teaching unit analysis, helping students to outline problems, and focus on the big picture. I seek to tailor examples and concept ideas to interests of the student to encourage their engagement in the topic. My philosophy is that by teaching and reinforcing foundational skills, I can expand a student’s capacity to understand more complex topics. The benefit of this approach is that often, these foundational skills are built upon by multiple disciplines. By strengthening a student’s foundation, I can better teach them to rationalize academic topics versus learning through rote memorization.
My goal is to provide a positive environment to help students learn and grow. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, would like to discuss things further, or to schedule a lesson!
