Currently, I am working on my PhD in Biomedical Sciences at UMass Chan Medical School, where I study Genetics and Bioinformatics. I have a Master's Degree in Biomedical Sciences from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and a Bachelor's in Biology from the University of Maine. I also obtained a Graduate Certificate in Public Health from the University of New England for completing the coursework portion of an MPH degree but chose not to complete the internship part, so I couldn't get the complete master's degree.

I have been tutoring chemistry since I was in high school (12+ years ago). Since then I have tutored high school, college, and graduate-level chemistry and biology courses for various companies, schools/universities, and freelance. Additionally, I have TA'd several classes including Chemistry, Genetics, and Biology- throughout my undergraduate and graduate schooling.

Over the last 7 years, I have worked extensively with TRIO programs at the high school and college levels, where I developed tutoring programs, mentored students, and served as an academic counselor. I have a lot of experience adjusting my content to the needs of the individual students I am working with.

My philosophy on tutoring and teaching is to learn by doing. I like to teach by working through problem sets.
Over the years I have collected a stash of problem sets for various chemistry, biochem, and biology topics. I will work with you to find out what material you are struggling with and build a problem set designed to help you master that material. Our sessions will be spent working through problem sets and reinforcing concepts. That said for students who need more of a teaching approach, I am happy to break things down in a more teaching/concepts way rather than in a problem-based approach.

I try to answer expert questions here on Wyzant when I have time to give you some examples of my teaching style, please feel free to check those out to see if we would be a good fit.

So let's get to learning!

ADHD

ADHD

I have had ADHD my entire life and have gone through the whole spectrum of treatment options. I have managed for years without medications and developed tips and tricks for managing without medications. I have also been on medications and still use methods to keep myself organized and on topic. Having ADHD doesn't have to limit your educational attainment, you just need to find what works for you, and I can help you explore that.
Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I have a Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences, where I had to take multiple research courses, which included biostatistics and a Biostatistics course. I also have taken Epidemiology, which included a fair amount of Biostatistics. Additionally, I am a PhD student now, and biostatistics is part of making sure my research is done well, so I put it to practice often.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I was a TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO SSS student myself when I was in High School and College. Those programs really helped me navigate the college process, so when I finished my degree I worked with my local TRIO programs to help advise high school students on their college search, test prep, financial aid, scholarship, and career development options. I have worked with TRIO Upward Bound and high school students across the state of Maine for 7+ years and have lots of advice, tips, and tricks to share with other students.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I have advanced computational skills refined through my doctoral research in computational biology, genetics, and bioinformatics. My educational background and practical experience in computational analysis and data science have honed my expertise in programming, data visualization, and algorithm development. My work in both academic and research settings has equipped me with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and effectively, making me an excellent resource for students seeking to understand computer science.
EMT/ NREMT

EMT/ NREMT

I have taken the EMTB class and the CNA course and passed both exams, and done all of the practical hours required for both. I then passed both the written and practical exams for the NREMT. I worked for the University volunteer Ambulance service while I was an Undergrad and worked in the ED as an ED Tech all throughout the pandemic.
Epidemiology

Epidemiology

I took 18 credits of Graduate Level Public Health courses which earned me a Certification. This included Epidemiology and Biostatistics. I have also published a paper in the field of pharmacoepidemiology.
Genetics

Genetics

I TA'd a college genetics class for 4 semesters when I was in college and then worked at The Jackson Laboratory for 4 years while getting my Master's in Biomedical Sciences. Now, I am working on my PhD in Biomedical Sciences where I studied genetics, bioinformatics, metabolism, and adipose tissue.
MCAT

MCAT

I studied for the MCAT, took a Princeton Review Prep Course, and took the MCAT. I applied to medical school back in 2023, but later decided I wanted to pursue a career in research more than a career in medicine, so pulled my applications. My advanced degrees and my experience taking the MCAT give me the perfect background to tutor this exam content. I have lots of books and practice questions to help with any students I tutor.
Neuroscience

Neuroscience

I have a Master's Degree in Biomedical Science during which I had to take a graduate-level Neuroscience course. I have also taken the Tufts graduate Neuroscience course taught by my former PI. I have several publications demonstrating my work in neuroscience over the 4 years I worked for Rob Burgess, PhD at the Jackson Laboratory.
Nutrition

Nutrition

I took multiple nutrition classes throughout my undergraduate and graduate careers. I have also taken biochemistry and I am very familiar with the chemical dynamics of nutrition and metabolism.
Sewing

Sewing

I have been sewing since I was 6. I started making quilts with my grandma, then started making clothes. I have run my own seamstress business for a time, making everything from quilts to clothing to costumes. I am a talented costume designer, I can draft my own patterns and create custom pieces for the most imaginative minds. Sewing has always been a great love of mine and one of my most skilled hobbies.

Fantastic Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Tutor

I can’t recommend Courtney enough! She took the time to break down complex concepts in a way that made sense to me and was always patient and encouraging. I came into this course struggling, but thanks to her support and clear explanations, I saw a huge improvement in both my understanding and my grades. She truly cares about her students’ success, and it shows in every session. If you’re having a tough time with biochemistry or molecular biology, she’s the one you want in your corner!

Outstanding Help with MCAT

Working with Courtney for about three months completely transformed my MCAT prep. Compared to self-studying, the progress I made with her guidance was unmatched. She came prepared with a wide range of high-quality resources and a deep understanding of the exam—everything from content review to test-taking strategies. I highly recommend Courtney to anyone looking for a supportive, knowledgeable tutor with the tools and insight to help you reach your full potential.

Knowledgeable and thorough tutor

Courtney is an amazing tutor. She helped me through an accelerated genetics course over the summer and is now continuing on to help me with my bioinformatics class. With her, there are no stupid questions and she is always happy to try and re-explain a concept if you have additional questions. Her way of teaching really helped me achieve success in my class and I am excited to keep learning with her.
