I have 30+ years of teaching experience at five highly ranked independent schools. I am a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Amherst College, and I have also earned Master of Arts in Teaching English from Smith College. I have tutored English and writing for many years and feel comfortable working with both High School and Middle School aged students. I have particularly strong experience working with high school seniors on their college application essays, as I have about 15 years of experience as a college counselor. Currently, I am the Director of College Guidance at a Boston-area independent school, where I also teach English.

I am also an avid chess player, and I compete regularly at USCF tournaments throughout the year. My rating is 1700+. Some notable accomplishments: I won 1st place at the 2016 Winchester Chess Club Championship Tournament, 1st place at the Fall 2016 tournament at M.I.T., and 2nd place at the Winter M.I.T. tournament. At the 2026 World Open, I played nine games and only lost once. I also have experience teaching chess to students, as I have been the faculty supervisor of the chess club at two independent schools.

Approved Subjects

Chess

Chess

I have been playing chess all of my life, and although I am by no means a grandmaster, I am a solid tournament player who competes regularly at both USCF and club tournaments, and I am qualified to coach any students at the beginner through intermediate levels. I have taught chess to students at two different independent schools, and I have extensive experience tutoring a variety of subjects to students of all ages. Because I have been an educator for 23 years, I know the value of providing instruction in a structured way, and each of my chess lessons will be broken into several mini-units, so students will develop a strong background in openings, middle games, end games, tactics, and strategy. My students will improve dramatically, but at the same time I will always keep the focus on having fun as well.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have worked in College Counseling for 10 years, and I am currently the Director of College Guidance at a strong Massachusetts independent school. My favorite part of the college process is the college essay, and that is where I will provide the most help to students (although I am also willing to help with other parts of the process as well). As an English teacher for over 20 years, I am well qualified to help students write personal essays. A warning: some college counseling tutors tend to be a little too "hands on" (a kind way of saying that they end up writing the essays for their students). Aside from the obvious ethical issues, one problem with this approach is that the resulting essays don't sound like they were written by students--colleges can spot them a mile away! As a tutor, I promise that I will help students find their OWN voice--which is what colleges very much want to hear. I will not only help students write excellent essays, but also aid them in building confidence as writers--something that will very much benefit them in college and beyond.
Writing

Writing

As an English teacher for over 20 years, I have worked extensively with students in every grade from 7th through 12th. I can, therefore, easily adapt a tutoring plan to all levels of development and sophistication. So whether your middle schooler is still struggling with the rudiments of a topic sentence or your 12th grader is having a tough time explaining the nuances of Hamlet, I can provide assistance in a nurturing, supportive, and structured way.
