Hello, I'm Lucia! I recently finished my undergraduate degree at Colby College, a small liberal arts school, where I double majored in mathematical sciences and anthropology. I graduated summa cum laude and was also a National Merit Scholar. I fell in love with math in college because of its beautiful patterns and the logical thinking it requires. However, I know not everyone enjoys math--in fact, many people hate it!
I saw this up close with dozens of students while working for the math department for 3 years as a TA and tutor for single-variable calculus and linear algebra. Most students who take calculus for the first time in college are not math majors, so I often noticed students shutting down or panicking at the sight of difficult problems. To help them gain math skills and confidence, I held help hours with 1-10 students at a time, engaging them individually and in groups. I would provide practice problems to work through together, or use visuals and fun examples to explain the material. I collaborated with professors to improve lesson plans and brainstorm in-class activities that would help the students better understand the concepts they were learning. I also tutored students one-on-one if they were struggling or had fallen behind; personalized attention, patience, and the ability to explain things in multiple ways can truly go a long way. My goal is always to get a student to truly understand something--not just memorize it.
Though I specialize in calculus, I am also able to tutor prealgebra, algebra, geometry, AP statistics, linear algebra, or pretty much any middle- or high school math. While my most recent experience is with college students, I do have experience working with kids of all ages; I tutored math for a few students (aged 12-15) while I was in high school, and I worked for 4 summers in childcare or summer camps for kids aged 6-17.
